
W. Tennis Has Strong Showing in First Fall Event

CHARLESTON, S.C. — In their first fall event, the Davidson women's tennis team had a solid weekend at the College of Charleston Invitational, Sept. 19-21, with seven Wildcats taking part in the invite over the weekend.
Competing in the "A" singles bracket was senior Michele Fanney (Virginia Beach, Va.), junior Teresa Wang (Charlotte, N.C.), sophomore Alison Rauh (Trier, Germany) and freshman Molly McDevitt. After falling in her first-round match, Wang advanced all the way to the finals on the consolation side with 6-3, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-3 wins, before seeing her singles run end in the finals.
McDevitt made it to the semifinals on the consolation side as well, earning a 6-2, 6-0 win in her first collegiate event.
Sophomore Rauh earned a sixth place finish in the "A1" singles bracket when she captured a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Kim Webb of Coastal Carolina in her opening round match. She fell to a player from Charlotte, but came back in her consolation match to take home a 7-5, 6-2 win for sixth place.
Competing in the "B" singles bracket for Davidson was four players. Freshman Stephani Synn had a nice opening debut in her first official fall collegiate event for the Wildcats. The freshman advanced all the way to the finals in the "B1" bracket with straight set wins over players from Charleston Southern, Charlotte and Coastal Carolina. She eventually fell to Keely Mulligan of College of Charleston in the finals by the score of 6-2, 6-2.
Fellow freshman Katharine Dicconson also saw action in her first collegiate event as she took part in the second bracket of the "B" singles side. Dicconson earned her first win with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over a player from East Carolina in her consolation match.
Sophomore Molly Verlin (Jacksonville, Fla.) finished seventh in the "B2" bracket when she earned a consolation win of 7-6, 6-7, 10-1 of Julie Cadet of Barry.
Davidson had a combined three doubles teams compete in the "A" and "B" doubles brackets with Rauh and sophomore Samantha Galainena (Burr Ridge, Ill.) picking up the best finish over the weekend. The duo reached the finals of the "B1" doubles bracket when they scored 9-7 and 8-3 wins in their first two matches. The team of Evans and Newman from College of Charleston halted Rauh and Galainena's run with an 8-2 victory in the finals.
The team of Wang and Synn reached the finals on the "A2" doubles consolation side, while Verlin and Dicconson teamed up to earn one win in their "B2" doubles run.
Davidson does not compete in its next fall event until late October (22nd-26th) when it heads to the ITA Regionals in Winston-Salem, N.C.
