
Wildcats Conclude Fall Action at Virginia Tech Invitational over Weekend

DAVIDSON, N.C. – In their final event of the fall season, the Davidson women's tennis team sent seven individuals to the Virginia Tech Fall Invitational held at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center over the weekend.
Playing in the "A" singles bracket over the weekend was Alison Rauh and Michele Fanney, who went a combined a 3-5 in their singles matches. Rauh dropped her first two matches to start, but closed out the weekend with a 6-4, 6-0 win and then a 6-0, 6-0 victory in her two consolation matches.
Fanney started the weekend off with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Varina Soler of East Carolina to advance to the quarterfinals. From there, she lost 6-2, 6-1, and then dropped her last two matches in consolation round.
The freshman duo of Molly McDevitt and Katharine Dicconson each competed in the "C" and "D" singles brackets. McDevitt opened singles play with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Olivia Stannard of Appalachian State and started her quarterfinal match with a 6-2 win, before suffering defeats in her next two sets, 6-2, 6-1, pushing her into the winners consolation bracket. She went 1-1 in her next two matches, earning a 6-0, 6-3 win over a player from East Carolina before closing out the weekend with a 6-3, 6-3 loss to grab 5th place overall.
After falling in straight sets to start the weekend, Dicconson rallied and won three straight in the consolation bracket, including a 6-4, 6-0 victory in the finals. She also picked up two 6-2, 6-3 wins prior to the finals match against Tamara Sachs of East Carolina.
Also competing in the "D" singles bracket with Dicconson was senior Lora Dushanova, who played in her first fall event of the season. The senior reached the semifinals on the winners side with 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-3 wins over players from Radford and Wofford. She was then forced to retire after trailing, 4-1, in her semifinal match.
Samantha Galainena and Molly Verlin were the last two Wildcats to compete in the singles play.
Verlin dropped her first two matches, before closing out with a 6-1, 6-2 win over a player from Radford in the consolation round.
Davidson had one doubles team each in all three doubles brackets with the teams of Dicconson and Rauh, and Galainena and Verlin each picking up three and two wins, respectively, during the invitational. Dicconson and Rauh advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-5 win over a team from East Carolina, but then fell 9-7 to Murray State, moving the duo into the consolation round. From there, Dicconson and Rauh tallied two wins to finish 3-1 in doubles action.
Galainena and Verlin opened play with an 8-5 loss, but regrouped to capture 8-4 and 8-6 wins in the semifinals and finals of the consolation round.
The Wildcats final doubles team, Fanney and McDevitt, went 1-2 over the weekend with their win coming by the score of 8-4 over a team from Wofford.
