Wildcats Compete at Southern Intercollegiate in M. Tennis

ATHENS, Ga. — In their second fall event of the season, the Davidson men's tennis team sent four players to compete in the Southern Intercollegiate, Sept. 19-21, on the campus of Georgia at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

31 teams in all were represented at the three-day event as the Wildcats competed individually in both singles and doubles.

In his first fall collegiate event, freshman Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) picked up two singles wins during the three-day event. Ater dropping his first-round match to Justin Pickham of Georgia State, Gee came back to capture a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Oliver Smith of ABAC in the consolations of the Division II singles bracket.

Gee then capped off his singles play with a hard-fought thrilling, 7-6 (6), 7-5, triumph over Stephan Bruwer of UT-Martin to finish 2-1 on the weekend.

Junior Eric Noble (Fayetteville, N.C.), senior Brandon Byrd (Raleigh, N.C.) and sophomore Carter Braxton (Charlotte, N.C.) also each competed in singles play, and nearly each won their consolation matches. All three of the 'Cats forced tie breakers to determine the winner after splitting their first two matches with their opponents.

Davidson also competed in doubles, dropping both of their first-round matches.

The Wildcats will host their alumni match this coming Saturday, Sept. 27 at 10 a.m. out on the Covington Tennis Courts.
