CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Davidson men's tennis team kicked off their fall season with a trip to the Virginia Fall Invitational as senior Scott Myers (West Palm Beach, Fla.), and the sophomore duo of Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.) and Arie Hefter (Birmingham, Ala.) represented the Wildcats over the weekend, Sept. 12-14.
All three first competed in singles play with Hefter having the best showing as he advanced all the way to the finals in the “D” singles bracket. The sophomore opened the invitational with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 round-one win before then defeating Chris Kushma of George Washington, 7-5, 6-4, to reach the semifinals. Hefter kept the winning ways going as earned a 6-2, 4-6, 4-0 win in the semis after his opponent had to retire, setting up a finals match against Gilbert Wong of Binghamton. Hefter's run ended there as he dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision.
Though Lyons and Myers did not advance as far as they would have hoped in singles play, the Davidson duo rebounded and teamed up in the “B” doubles bracket for a very impressive showing. They opened their doubles play with two first and second round wins by the scores of 8-5 over teams from Nebraska and Elon.
Following those wins, Lyons and Myers earned a hard-fought 9-8 win over the doubles team from George Washington to advance to the finals against a doubles team from Virginia. Though their run ended their, the duo gave the Cavalier doubles team all they could handle, dropping a heartbreaking tie breaker to fall 9-8.
Davidson will head this weekend, Sept. 19-22, to the Southern Intercollegiate in Athens, Ga. for its next fall event.
