Davidson and Charlotte Suspend Men’s Basketball Series for 2008-09

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Director of Athletics Jim Murphy announced today that the men's basketball series between Davidson and Charlotte will be suspended for the 2008-09 season. The two schools have reached an oral agreement to try to resume the series in the 2010-11 season at John M. Belk Arena, pending the determination of a mutually agreed upon date.
Contrary to some reports, there was never a final agreement between the schools to play against each other in the 2008-09 season. Davidson and Charlotte had announced a tentative game date of Dec. 13, which was contingent upon Davidson being able to move its game with Chattanooga, which had already been set for that date. Davidson and Chattanooga made extensive good-faith efforts to move the game, but scheduling conflicts involving exams at both schools made rescheduling impossible. It therefore became impossible for Davidson and Charlotte to play Dec. 13.
As recently as Friday, Davidson and Charlotte made good-faith efforts and explored a variety of options for other dates to continue the series in the 2008-09 season. Ultimately, the two schools were unable to determine a date that was feasible for both institutions.
“Obviously, I'm extremely disappointed that we were not able to reach an agreement with Charlotte to play this season,” said Murphy. “Everyone on both sides worked hard to make the game happen, but a 20-game Southern Conference schedule plus our exam period limited our opportunities. This is an important rivalry for our program, and I look forward to our resuming the home and home series in 2010.”
