GREENSBORO, N.C. – Chase FitzPatrick's single and Tommy Piacenza's double in the top of the ninth keyed a three-run inning for Davidson as the Wildcats broke the game open en route to a 6-2 SoCon baseball victory at UNC Greensboro Friday night.
Leading 3-2 in the top of the ninth, FitzPatrick singled with two outs to drive in Brett Shore, who led off with a single. Piacenza followed with a two-run double, and Davidson opened a 6-2 cushion.
Mike Frongello, who had pitched Davidson out of a jam in the eighth by getting consecutive groundouts with a runner in scoring position, pitched a scoreless ninth for the save.
John Edwards, making his second career start, pitched five innings and allowed four hits and two runs. Ian Horkley tossed two scoreless innings and allowed two hits.
Piacenza and FitzPatrick both went 2-for-5 from the plate for the Wildcats (12-37, 4-23 SoCon), while Shore, Danny Weiss and Chris FitzPatrick each had two hits.
Davidson took a 1-0 lead when Matt Webb led off the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field. The 'Cats added two runs in the fifth as Hugh Eden walked and went to third on a Shore double. A wild pitch allowed Eden to score, and Zach Kayne doubled to drive in Shore and open a 3-0 Wildcat lead.
Ray Quinones singled home Corey Overholtzer to get the Spartans (31-25, 15-12 SoCon) on the board in the bottom of the fifth, and Greg Feltes scored on a Tim Carrier groundout in the sixth to trim the lead to 3-2.
Davidson looked to have something going in the top of the eighth as Weiss led off with a single, and Chase FitzPatrick followed with a double, putting runners on second and third. But Rob Gilliam struck out the next two batters, and after a walk, got the last out on a grounder, leaving the bases loaded for the 'Cats.
It was the first time Davidson won a conference series this season. The Wildcats will return to action at the Southern Conference Tournament May 20, in Charleston, S.C.
