DAVIDSON, N.C. -- On the heels of leading the Davidson Wildcats to their first appearance in the Elite Eight and being named the Most Outstanding Player of the Midwest Regional, Stephen Curry has been named to the Associated Press All-America second team.
A sophomore from Charlotte, N.C., Curry burst onto the national scene scoring 128 points in four NCAA Tournament games, including three straight 30 point performances (Gonzaga 40, Georgetown 30, Wisconsin 33).
Along with ranking fourth nationally in scoring with an average of 25.9 points per game, Curry set an NCAA single-season record for three-point field goals with 162. The 2008 SoCon Player of the Year also ranked among national leaders in three-pointers per game (4.5 /2nd ) and free-throw percentage (.894 / 9th).
The 6-3 shooting guard is the first Wildcat to earn AP All-America status since John Gerdy following the 1978-79 season.
North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough and Kansas State's Michael Beasley were unanimous selections to The Associated Press' All-America first team. Beasley and Kevin Love of UCLA made it two straight years that two freshmen were chosen. Sophomore D.J. Augustin of Texas and junior Chris Douglas-Roberts rounded out the first-team selections.
Notre Dame sophomore center Luke Harangody was sixth in the voting with 211 points, and he was joined on the second team by seniors Shan Foster of Vanderbilt, D.J. White of Indiana and Roy Hibbert of Georgetown, and college basketball's newest star, Curry , who led the Wildcats to the regional final by averaging 34.5 points in the NCAA tournament.
