STATESBORO, Ga. -— For the fourth straight year, the Davidson women's tennis team opened Southern Conference play at 4-0 after taking five of the six singles matches to earn a 6-1 road decision against Georgia Southern on Saturday afternoon at the Hanner Tennis Complex in Statesboro.

The Wildcats ran their win streak to four in a row with the win to improve to 12-3 overall, while GSU fell to an even 8-8 overall and 2-4 in league play. Davidson also ran its all-time record against the Eagles to 16-4.

Concerned about the possibilities of poor weather, both teams decided that it would be in their best interest to open the match with singles competition.

Sophomore Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.), Michele Fanney (Virginia Beach, Va.) and senior Meredith Skeeters (Greensboro, N.C.) gave Davidson an early 3-0 lead with wins at No. 2, 4 and 6 in straight sets. All three Wildcats combined to give up just three games in their three matches.

Skeeters continued her strong senior campaign by winning her 11th consecutive singles match and fourth in SoCon action. She sits at 11-1 on the year and 4-0 in league matches.

Teresa Wang (Charlotte, N.C.) pushed her win streak to seven straight in singles play with a two-set 6-1, 7-6 win over Christine Caforio at No. 5 to give Davidson a 4-0 lead.

Then senior Kelsey Linville (Columbus, Ohio) finished off the fifth singles point for Davidson by scoring a three-set victory over Kristi Kegerreis at No. 1 to move her singles mark to 9-4 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the league. She has won her last four straight matches at No. 1.

The final point for the Wildcats came by way of a sweep in the doubles with Davidson taking all three matches.

Fanney and Wang teamed up for the first time at No. 1 to score an 8-1 win, while Skeeters and Berry, in their first match as a doubles team this year, earned an 8-2 win at No. 2.

Returning to the lineup for the first time since mid-February was freshman Allison Rauh (Trier, Germany), who had been battling an injury. She and senior Kim Whelan (Sewickley, Pa.) improved to 5-1 as a doubles pair by taking the No. 3 match, 8-4, to give Davidson the 6-1 win.

Davidson finishes up its back-to-back SoCon matches with a trip to College of Charleston, Mar. 30, for a 12 p.m. match.
