WILDCAT UPDATE
- 10th seeded Davidson (28-6) enters the “Sweet 16” having won 24 straight games, the nation's longest streak.
- Last week in Raleigh, the Wildcats knocked off seventh-seeded Gonzaga, 82-76, and second-seeded Georgetown, 74-70, recording their first NCAA Tournament victories since 1969. Until the first and second round, Davidson had never defeated a ranked opponent under Bob McKillop. The Wildcats last victory over a team in the Top 25 came during the 1973-74 season when they knocked off No. 15 South Carolina, 70-59, Jan. 12, 1974. The Zags entered 24th in the A.P. Top 25, while the Hoyas eighth in both polls.
- In Davidson's come-from-behind 82-76 victory over Gonzaga, Stephen Curry scored 30 of his game-high 40 points in the second half and drilled eight three-pointers. Jason Richards contributed 15 points and nine assists, while Andrew Lovedale recorded his second career double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
- Sunday, Curry scored 25 of his 30 points in the second period, as the Wildcats rallied from 17 points down to upset Georgetown. The 6-3 shooting guard missed 10 of his first 12 shots but connected on six of his last nine to become just the six player in NCAA history to hit the 30-point plateau in their first three tournament games. Richards added 20 points and five assists, while Lovedale had 11 points and five rebounds for the Wildcats.
- Davidson's last trip to the “Sweet 16” came in 1969, when Lefty Driesell led the Wildcats to the East Regional Finals before falling to North Carolina.
- Along with setting an arena record at the RBC Center and becoming the first player to score 40 points in the NCAA Tournament since Gerry McNamara (2004), Curry broke a number of school records with his performance Friday (See Curry's Bio on Page 24).
- Curry, the SoCon Player of the Year and second-team All-America selection (Sporting News & Sports Illustrated), ranks fourth nationally with an average of 25.7 per outing. The five-time SoCon Player of the Week and four-time Player of the Month, ranks among national leaders in free-throw percentage (12th/88.8), 3-pointers made (1st/152) and 3-pointers per game (2nd/4.5).
- Richards, Curry's backcourt mate and fellow first-team all-conference selection, is also averaging double digits (12.7 ppg.) and leads the country in assists at 8.0 per contest. The 2008 Bob Cousy nominee is the first player in school history to score 1,000 points and hand out 600 assists.
