WILDCAT UPDATE
- Coming off their first NCAA Tournament victory since 1969, the 10th seeded Davidson Wildcats (27-6) will put the nation's longest winning streak on the line against second-seeded Georgetown Sunday afternoon in the Midwest Regional with the right to advance to the “Sweet Sixteen”.
- In Davidson's come-from-behind 82-76 victory over Gonzaga, Stephen Curry scored 30 of his game-high 40 points in the second half and drilled eight three-pointers to lead three Davidson players in double figures. Jason Richards contributed 15 points and nine assists, while Andrew Lovedale recorded his second career double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds in the Wildcats' 23rd consecutive triumph.
- Along with setting a new standard for points scored at the RBC Center and becoming the first player to score 40 points in the NCAA Tournament since Gerry McNamara of Syracuse (2004), Curry broke a number of school records with his performance Friday (See Curry's Bio on Page 24).
- Curry, the Southern Conference Player of the Year and second-team All-America selection (Sporting News & Sports Illustrated), ranks fifth nationally in scoring with an average of 25.5 per outing. The five-time SoCon Player of the Week and four-time Player of the Month, also ranks among national leaders in free-throw percentage (14th/88.7), three-pointers made (1st/147) and three-pointers per game (3rd/4.4).
- Richards, Curry's backcourt mate and fellow first-team all-conference selection is also averaging double digits (12.7 ppg.) and still leads the country in assists at 8.0 per contest. The 2008 Bob Cousy nominee is also the first player in school history to score 1,000 points and hand out 600 assists.
- Until Friday's win, Davidson had never defeated a ranked opponent under Bob McKillop. The Wildcats last victory over a team in the Top 25 came during the 1973-74 season when Davidson knocked off No. 15 South Carolina, 70-59, Jan. 12, 1974. Gonzaga entered the first round 24th in the Associated Press Top 25.
- Davidson's last trip to the “Sweet Sixteen” came in 1969, when Lefty Driesell led the Wildcats to the East Regional Finals before falling to North Carolina.
