GREENVILLE, N.C. - Michele Fanney (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Teresa Wang' (Charlotte, N.C.) s 8-5 victory over Hannah Priest and Varinia Soler in a No. 2 doubles match earned the Wildcats' opening point and eventually proved to be the difference as Davidson edged No. 73 East Carolina 4-3 in non-conference women's tennis action Friday afternoon at the ECU Tennis Complex.
The Wildcats, who extended their consecutive match win streak to three straight, improved to 11-3 on the year while the Lady Pirates, ranked No. 73 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Poll, fell to 12-3.
After sophomore Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.) and Kelsey Linville (Columbus, Ohio) opened doubles play with an 8-2 win at the No. 1 slot, East Carolina evened the ledger when Luiza Borges and Mireia Gol defeated Lora Dushanova (Silven Bulgaria) and Kim Whelan (Sewickley, Pa.) 8-4 at No. 3.
Fanney and Wang closed out the doubles triumph to give the Wildcats an early 1-0 team lead.
Linville finished 2-0 on the day with a singles win over Jessica Cook at No. 1 by the score of 6-2, 6-1, while Wang also added a victory in singles action at No. 6, her first at that position on the year.
Senior Meredith Skeeters (Greensboro, N.C.), fresh off Southern Conference Player of the Week honors, continued to roll in singles play with her 10th straight win in a row to finish off the scoring for Davidson. Skeeters is 10-1 on the year and remains a perfect 4-0 at the No. 5 singles position.
Davidson takes a few days off before continuing its four-match road swing with back-to-back SoCon matches at Georgia Southern (Mar. 29) and College of Charleston (Mar. 30) at 2 and 12 p.m.
