Sweep of Singles and Doubles Play Leads Davidson to 7-0 Win over ASU

BOONE, N.C. — The Davidson women's tennis team improved to 2-0 in Southern Conference action by sweeping all three doubles matches and then finishing off the match with wins at all six singles positions for a 7-0 win over Appalachian State on Saturday afternoon.

Davidson, who last played on Mar. 3, ran its overall record 9-3, while ASU fell to 4-5 and 0-3 in league play. It was the eighth shutout win of the season for the Wildcats.

Senior Kelsey Linville and sophomore Virginia Berry led the way in doubles action to start the match by winning their fifth straight to run their doubles mark to 9-2 with a 8-3 win over Anja Gugger and Mallory Cook at No. 1. Davidson then took wins at No. 2 and No. 3 by the score of 8-2 at both positions to grab an early 1-0 lead in team points.

The Wildcats proceeded to then take all six singles matches in straight sets, with the Mountaineers winning no more than four games in just one set, for a 7-0 win.

Seniors Kim Whelan and Meredith Skeeters remained unbeaten at their respective positions on the year with wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Whelan, who ran her No. 4 singles mark to 4-0 and her overall singles record to a team-best 9-2, picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win over Amanda Cash.

Skeeters ran her No. 5 singles record to 3-0, a perfect 2-0 in league matches, with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5. She improved to 8-1 overall in singles action, picking up her eighth straight victory.

Junior Lora Dushanova registered her seventh singles win of the year with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at No. 6 singles over Lindsay King, while Linville, Berry and junior Michele Fanney finished out the match with wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3. 

Davidson returns home for its second straight SoCon match when Western Carolina comes visiting on Sunday, Mar. 16 at 1 p.m.
