CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- The Davidson women's basketball team saw their season-high five-game winning streak come to an end as it suffered an 80-57 defeat on the road at Western Carolina in Southern Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Ramsey Center.
In a battle of second-place teams in the SoCon, the Wildcats fell to 13-8 overall and dropped its first conference game since Jan. 5 to fall to 7-3 in league play. Western earned its eighth win in the past nine games to improve to 16-6 overall and 8-2 in SoCon action. The Catamounts took the two-game regular-season series with the win.
For the third straight game, and ninth time this year, junior Mercedes Robinson (Baltimore, Md.) paced the Wildcats with 13 points. She added 11 rebounds for her third straight double-double and ninth of the season. It's the second time this year Robinson has had three consecutive double-doubles. All 13 of her points came in the second half along with seven rebounds.
Senior Honna Housley (Riceville, Tenn.) gave Davidson two players in double figures with 11 points, nine of them in first half when she hit 3-of-5 shots from downtown. Davidson as a team matched its season-high with 10 three-pointers, finishing at 50 percent on 10-of-20.
The Catamounts got an all-around effort from all 10 of their players in the win. Five bench players combined for 48 points as three of them hit for double figures, led by Ashley Pellom's 14 points. All but one of the 10 overall players scored at least five points.
Western Carolina came out firing on all cylinders, hitting 10 of its first 16 shots to open up a 21-9 lead at 11:36 mark of the first half. Eight different Catamounts scored during the opening run and all 10 players who saw action in the first stanza etched their names in the scorer's book.
WCU also capitalized on 13 Wildcat turnovers by turning them into 20 points, while adding 24 of its 43 first-half points in the paint. It finished the contest with 36 points in the paint and added another 23 second chance points off of 17 offense rebounds.
A three-ball by Monique Dawson followed by a layup from Heather Swayne at the 5:31 mark pushed the lead out to 19 points (34-15) for Western and it grew to as many as 21 in the half, before Davidson cut it to 18 (43-25) on a three-pointer by sophomore Alex Thompson (Asheville, N.C.) to go into halftime.
Helping to keep things somewhat close for the Wildcats was their 5-of-8 shooting from downtown in the first period.
In the second half, Davidson cut the lead to 15 when sophomore Julia Paquette (Stockbridge, Ga.) hit a layup in the lane to make it 50-35 with 15:31.
The 15-point deficit though, was as close as the 'Cats got the rest of the way in the second half as Western Carolina led by as many as 30 points in taking the 80-57 decision from the Wildcats.
Emily Clarke and Kendra Carroll were the other two Catamounts to hit double digits off the bench with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Davidson will now turn around and travel to SoCon-leader Chattanooga for a 7 p.m. contest on Monday, Feb. 4.
