
Strong Singles Play Carries Wildcat M. Tennis to 6-1 Win

DAVIDSON, N.C. – By taking five of the six singles matches to go along with two of the three doubles matches, the Davidson men's tennis team secured its second straight win of the 2008 campaign with a 6-1 home win over Longwood on Saturday afternoon at Knobloch Tennis Center.
Davidson ran its record to 2-1, while the Longwood Lancers suffered its fifth loss of the season to drop to 0-5.
Senior Phillip Compeau (Wilkesboro, N.C.) and sophomore Eric Noble (Fayetteville, N.C.) scored their first one of the season at No. 1 doubles with an 8-2 win, and sophomore Sam Burns (Banner Elk, N.C.) and freshman Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.) finished off the doubles point with an 8-3 win at No. 2 to give Davidson a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Seeing their first action as a doubles team was junior Ethan Jaffee (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Carter Braxton (Charlotte, N.C.) at the No. 3 spot. It was Braxton's first official collegiate match of the season.
Jaffee in his first match of the season at No. 1 singles, scored a 7-6, 6-1 win to lead four other Wildcats to two-set singles wins on the afternoon. Three of the sets went to a tie-breaker, but Davidson earned wins in each one.
Recording their first wins of the season in singles play was Burns and freshman Arie Hefter (Birmingham, Ala.) with victories at No. 4 and No. 6. Burns played one of those tie-breakers, earning a 7-6, 6-4 win over Billy Heird of the Lancers.
Hefter earned a 6-2. 6-4 win over Mani Barajas-Alexander to move to 1-1 on the season and earn his first win at No. 6 singles.
Junior Scott Myers (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Lyons capped off the scoring with their second wins on the seasons at No. 5 and 3 singles.
Davidson hits the road for a match against nationally ranked South Carolina on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
