DAVIDSON, N.C. — In search of their fifth straight home win, Davidson will wrap up its two-game regular-season series against Elon on Monday night in women's basketball action. Twice this year the 'Cats have had four-game home winning streaks.
The Opening Tip
Davidson (15-9, 9-4 SoCon) is coming off its biggest win of the season, a 26-point win against UNC Greensboro, and seeks to sweep the two-game series against Elon (8-18, 3-11 SoCon) this Monday at 7 p.m. in Belk Arena.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
The series is 12 games old with Davidson leading 9-3 and winners of the past eight meetings. The 'Cats took 50-40 decision on Jan. 21 at Elon.
Scouting the Wildcats
After the Wildcats earned their biggest come-from-behind victory of the season at Appalachian State on Feb. 9, they decided to make their next game not so dramatic. They did that by earning their largest margin of victory to date this season with a 76-50 triumph over visiting UNC Greensboro in Southern Conference action on Saturday, Feb. 15 to sweep the two-game season series. It was Davidson's fourth straight win at Belk Arena to improve to 8-2 on the year at home.
Assisting the Wildcats in scoring their largest win of the season was junior Mercedes Robinson, who recorded her 10th double-double of the year with 20 points and 11 rebounds. She was one of three 'Cats to hit the double-digit mark in points, joined by senior Danielle Hemerka (12 pts./6 rebs.) and junior Kelly Gassie, who came off the bench for a season-best 14 points. Davidson has placed at least three scorers in double digits five of the past six games and 14 times overall.
Robinson leads the team with 13.2 points and 9.1 rebounds per game averages in league contests. She has scored in double figures in six of the past eight games and recorded double doubles in four of those games. The junior is shooting 56 percent from the field as well as hitting 45 percent of her three-balls against SoCon foes.
In their last meeting against Elon, Hemerka turned in her best game of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds, while becoming the 11th Wildcat in program history to surpass the 1,000-point mark in a 50-40 Wildcat win. The 40 points are a season-low allowed by Davidson.
The Wildcats have had Elon's number the past four years as they ran their winning streak to eight straight after the 50-40 road win on Jan. 21. Davidson has not suffered a defeat to the Phoenix since a 55-53 setback in Feb. 14, 2004. It owns a 9-3 overall record in the all-time series.
Scouting the Phoenix
Coming off its sixth 70-point game of the year, a 72-52 win at ASU on Saturday, the Elon Phoenix picked up just their second win in the past 13 games. Elon enters play in seventh place in the SoCon and 2-5 since its last meeting against the Wildcats.
The Phoenix set the tone early against ASU, jumping out to a 14-0 lead before the Moutaineers scored their opening points with 13:40 remaining in the first half.
In the second half, Appalachian State scored 10 unanswered points during a stretch to cut Elon's lead to 15 at 60-45 with 4:52 left, but that would be as close they came with Elon scoring 12 of the final 15 points to seal the win.
Tiffany Davis led the way with 16 points, while Tierra Bumbrey added 15. The duo ranks third and first respectively, in scoring at 9.2 and 12.7 on the team. Bumbrey, coming off SoCon Player of the Week honors after tallying a career-high 36 points at Western Carolina, leads the team in nearly every offensive category, including field goals and three-pointers (54 -2nd most in the league ) made. She also has pocketed 72 steals, good for first in the SoCon. In her last meeting against Davidson, Bumbrey was held in check with just eight points on 3-of-13 shooting.
In addition to Davis and Bumbrey hitting the double-digit mark at Appalachian State, Kitara McMoore scored 12 points.
