DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's basketball team, come off a thrilling come-from-behind victory last Saturday, will play host to UNC Greensboro on Friday evening in Southern Conference action.
The Opening Tip
Davidson (14-9, 8-4 SoCon) will finish up its two-game season series against UNC Greensboro (5-19, 3-10 SoCon) on Friday evening at 7 p.m. as it is in search of its fourth straight win at home.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
The series is 26-9 in favor of UNC Greensboro. The Wildcats are now 5-5 in the past 10 meetings and 3-2 in the last five after earning a 70-59 win in their first meeting this year on Jan. 18.
Scouting the Wildcats
The Wildcats got back on the winning track in dramatic fashion with a thrilling 67-66 road win against Appalachian State this past Saturday. The 'Cats had dropped their previous two contests (at Western Carolina and Chattanooga), and were in danger of dropping its third until a last- second shot by Mercedes Robinson carried them to victory.
Trailing the whole game and by as many as 21 points in the first half, Davidson twice knotted the score up at 59-all and 65-all with under five minutes to go. Then after ASU hit just 1-of-2 free throws with 10.4 seconds left, the Wildcats drove the ball down to their end of the court only to see it get knocked out of bounds with 4.2 ticks left in the game.
That's when Robinson stepped up and gathered an inbounds pass in the paint and swished home a three-footer for the game-winning shot, her only bucket of the second half, to carry to 'Cats to the come-from-behind victory. Robinson finished the contest with just six points, but her last two points of the game were the only two the Wildcats needed in earning a hard fought win on the road.
Senior Danielle Hemerka led four Wildcats in double digits with a double-double, her second of the season, by scoring 12 points and hauling in a game-high tying 11 boards, also a season-best for the senior. The four 'Cats in double figures was the fourth time this year they have accomplished the feat.
In its last meeting against UNCG, Davidson took home a 70-59 win on the road. Sophomore Alex Thompson scored a career-high 20 points and dished out five assists to lead three Wildcats in double digits.
Davidson will look to keep the winning ways going at home as it is riding a three-game winning streak and sits at 7-2 on the year. The Wildcats are 25-8 the past three years at home, twice rattling off six-game winning streaks.
Scouting the Spartans
UNC Greensboro, just 2-7 since its loss to Davidson on Jan. 18, is coming off a 64-52 defeat at the hands of a red-hot Chattanooga squad who earned its 17th straight win. Despite its bench outscoring the Mocs, 22-10, UNCG shot just 32.7 percent from the field in dropping its fourth straight game. The three other setbacks have come against Georgia Southern, College of Charleston and Western Carolina.
The Spartans were led by Lakiah Hyson who was 3-of-5 from the floor for a team-high nine points. Its the sixth game this year UNCG did not place at least one player in double figures. Hyson was held in check last time out against Davidson, scoring just two points on 1-of-7 shooting. She did dish out a team-high seven assists, while pocketing three steals as she has a team-best 40 on the year.
Brittany Frazier led the way on the glass against Chattanooga with a team-high five rebounds. It marked the 10th time this season the forward has led the team in rebounding as she averages a team-high 5.3 boards per contest.
