DAVIDSON, N.C. — Returning home after six straight road contests to open the year, the Davidson women's basketball team starts the month of December by hosting Furman in its home and conference opener on Tuesday at John M. Belk Arena.
The Opening Tip
Davidson (1-5, 0-0 SoCon) is looking to snap its five-game losing streak when it plays host to the Furman Paladins (3-2, 0-0 SoCon) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in its home and Southern Conference opener.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
The series has Furman leading 26-18 after the Wildcats split their two meetings last year against the Paladins. Davidson had its four-game win streak vs. Furman snapped last year after dropping a 70-66 road decision, Feb. 25. Despite the loss, the 'Cats have won nine of the past 11 meetings dating back to Feb. 8, 2003.
Scouting the Wildcats
•Davidson finished up the last of its in-season tournaments last weekend, dropping two games to No. 17 Vanderbilt and St. Joseph's at the Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Classic.
•The last time Davidson started the season 1-5 was in 2005-06 and that team finished 17-12 overall.
•After shooting 33.2 percent from the field in their first four games, Davidson is shooting 42 percent the past two contests. The 'Cats hit a season-best 24 field goals, including a season-high seven from behind the arc, vs. St. Joe's.
•Davidson is coming off its second straight 10-win season at home and has gone 28-8 the past 3 yrs.
•Since head coach Annette Watts first season in 2001-02, Davidson is 5-2 in home openers, including last year's 62-56 win against Georgia Southern. In the program's 29-year history, the Wildcats are 12-15 overall in their home openers and have gone 6-9 in conference openers.
•Senior Mercedes Robinson, fresh off a personal-best 24 points vs. St. Joseph's last Saturday, paces the team with 13.8 ppg and 8.8 rpg averages. She garnered all-tournament team honors last weekend.
•Sophomore Ashley Lax is also averaging double digits at 10.8 ppg, having scored in double figures in four of the first six games. She had a career-best 19 points vs. St. Joe's. The sharp-shooter has used the three-ball to her advantage the past two games, going 6-for-13 from downtown.
•The 'Cats continue to crash the boards as they have out-rebounded four of their first six opponents. They have also hit the offensive glass, hauling in 10 or more offensive rebounds five times.
•Last year's meeting at home vs. the Paladins saw the Wildcats score a 74-59 victory behind Robinson's double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Scouting the Paladins
•Furman has been off since Nov. 25 when it last play at Rice, suffering a 66-62 loss. Katie Johnson scored a career-high 23 points to lead three players in double figures in the setback.
•The Paladins, who also played at No. 14 Texas during the two-game road swing to Rice, opened the year with three straight wins: Clemson (82-68), UNC Asheville (71-30) and South Carolina St. (75-41).
•Furman ranks second in the league in points per game at 68.2, while once again pacing the SoCon in FT% (.793) and 3-PT% (.414). The Paladins led the league in both categories last year.
•Lee Stephens leads the team with a 17.0 ppg average, good for top honors in the SoCon. The junior opened the year with a career-high 34 points against Clemson to earn SoCon Player of the Week. She is shooting 43 percent from the field and has hit 23 of her 27 free throws.
•Behind Stephens is Melissa Liebschwager and Kali Holtfreter with averages of 14.2 and 11.8 ppg. Liebschwager, who is second on the team with a 5.2 rebounding average, earned Furman's second Player of the Week honor, Nov. 18-24. She is also second on the team with eight made three-pointers and has dished out a team-high 16 assists.
•In last year's 70-66 win over Davidson, Liebschwager led three players in double figures with 14 points, 12 of them from behind the arc. Furman as team hit 10-of-20 three-point tries in the game.
•The Paladins return 11 of their 14 letterwinners from last year's 10-20 team (5-13 SoCon).
•Of those 11 returners, four of them are starters.
•Last year saw Furman go 4-11 on the road, including just 2-7 in league games.
