DAVIDSON, N.C. — With a combined three goals last weekend in wins over Samford and Chattanooga, junior forward Kyri Bye-Nagel (Hanau, Germany) wrapped up the week by earning Southern Conference women's soccer Player of the Week honors for the week of Sept. 30-Oct. 7, as voted on by the league's sports information directors today.
The award is her second of the season after garnering the honor to open the 2008 campaign. Overall, the junior forward has won the weekly award four times throughout her three-year career.
“Kyri has been working extremely hard at practice the past few weeks, so it's a testament to her work ethic that she receives the player of the week award this week,” said head coach Greg Ashton. “Besides scoring, Kyri is working hard to help make the team better, which shows her dedication to helping this team reach its goals.”
Bye-Nagel led Davidson to a perfect 2-0 week to push the Wildcats' season-high win streak to four straight, with all four wins coming against league opponents.
In her first game of the week, the junior capped off Davidson's first win in program history against the Samford Bulldogs with her fourth goal of the season to finish off a 3-0 victory on Friday, Oct. 3. It was Bye-Nagel's first goal since opening the season with three goals in her first four games.
Bye-Nagel then recorded her first multi-goal game of the season when she guided the 'Cats to a season-high five goals in a 5-0 win over Chattanooga on Sunday afternoon to keep Davidson's league mark at a perfect 4-0-0.
She got things started versus the Mocs when she struck for her fifth goal of the season at the 21:56 mark. Fellow classmate Lauren Conner (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) crossed a ball from the right endline into the box where Bye-Nagel kicked it to the near post for a 1-0 Wildcat advantage.
Then, Bye-Nagel started a four-goal scoring rally in the second half with her second goal of the game in the 51st minute. Off a free kick just past midfield on the near side, senior Melanee Smith (Bloomfield Township, Mich.) served a perfectly placed through ball into the far side of six-yard box where a streaking Bye-Nagel timed the pass just right and drilled a right-footed shot to the far post to give her a team-high six goals on the year.
With her three goals over the weekend, Bye-Nagel pushed her team-high goal total to six, which places her in a three-way tie for second-most in the league. Her 13 points (six goals, one assist) are tied for third in the conference.
Davidson looks to continue its winning ways when it heads to Charleston, S.C. on Friday, Oct. 10 for a 7 p.m. SoCon contest against College of Charleston. The Wildcats captured 2-1 overtime win last year at Alumni Stadium over the Cougars.
