Media and Coaches Pick Davidson First in South Division

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Southern Conference coaches and the league's media association have picked the Davidson men's basketball team first in the South Division in their respective preseason polls, announced at the conference's Basketball Tip-Off Luncheon today in Charlotte.
The Wildcats garnered 11 first-place votes in the coaches poll, and junior Stephen Curry was named the Preseason Player of the Year. Senior Andrew Lovedale joined Curry on the preseason all-conference team along with Nicchaeus Doaks and Stephen McDowell (Chattanooga), Andrew Goudelock and Jermaine Johnson (College of Charleston), Brandon Giles (Western Carolina), Brett James (Elon), Donald Sims (Appalachian State) and Cameron Wells (The Citadel). Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players or schools as part of the voting.
The College of Charleston was picked to finish second in the South Division, garnering 56 points, while Georgia Southern earned 43 points to finish third, followed by Wofford (32), Furman (29) and The Citadel (22). In the North, Chattanooga earned 66 points to garner first, and Elon was selected second in the division with 49 points, followed by Appalachian State (48). UNC Greensboro (33) was chosen fourth, edging out Western Carolina (28) and newcomer Samford University (23), which begins its first season in Southern Conference play in 2008-09.
In the media poll, Davidson finished with 119 points on the strength of 19 first-place votes. The College of Charleston earned the final first-place vote and finished second with 98 total points. Georgia Southern was chosen third, followed by Wofford, Furman and The Citadel.
Chattanooga captured 17 of 20 first-place votes to earn first place in the North Division. Appalachian State picked up two first-place votes and finished with 92 points for second place, while Elon earned the final first-place vote and took third place with 80 points. UNC Greensboro (62), Western Carolina (37) and Samford (32) completed the North Division standings.
Davidson returns three starters and 11 lettermen, including four of its top six scorers, from the 2007-08 team that advanced to the Midwest Regional Final and finished the season ranked ninth in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. The Wildcats open the campaign against Guilford Nov. 14, in Belk Arena.
