Results from the Jim Causey/Davidson Invitational
DAVIDSON, N.C. — Freshman Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) combined to score four singles and doubles wins in his third career fall collegiate event, and sophomore Carter Braxton (Charlotte, N.C.) matched Gee with two singles wins of his own as the Davidson men's tennis team hosted the two-day Jim Causey/Davidson Invitational, Oct. 10-11, on the Covington Tennis Courts.
Along with Davidson, Southern Conference opponents Furman and Appalachian State, along with cross-county rival Charlotte, also attended the round-robin team-tournament.
All eight players who participated for the Wildcats scored at least one singles win over the weekend.
Gee, who last weekend reached the round of 16 in singles play at the Georgia Tech Invitational, dropped his first singles match against Furman in a tie-breaker, but came back to score wins in his next two matches against Charlotte and Appalachian State. Playing against the 49ers to start the day on Saturday, Gee earned a hard-fought 1-6, 6-0, 8-4 win, and then finished his afternoon off with a straight set, 6-4, 6-2, triumph over Britton Webb of ASU.
In doubles play, Gee teamed up with junior Eric Noble (Fayetteville, N.C.) to go 2-1 on the weekend. After dropping their first match on Friday, the duo came back with two 8-6 wins over doubles teams from Charlotte and Appalachian State.
Noble added a singles win to his resume over the weekend with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Brad Clinard of Charlotte, one of only two singles wins Davidson got against Charlotte.
Braxton, looking to move into the starting lineup this spring, had a nice two-day weekend in singles play by taking a 6-1, 6-4 win over Watson George of Furman on Friday, before closing out his weekend with a 10-8 tie-breaker win against Russ Ferrari of Appalachian State after both players split their first two sets, 6-1, 3-6.
All-Southern Conference second team member Scott Myers (West Palm Beach, Fla.) went 2-2 in singles and doubles action with both wins coming against Charlotte.
Despite going 1-2 in singles play, junior Tareq Alani (Chapel Hill, N.C.) battled to the end in each of his singles matches, forcing tie-breakers in all three of them. His hard work paid off as he finished out the invitational with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 triumph over the Mountaineers Eddie Elliott.
Also scoring wins in singles play over the weekend was senior Brandon Byrd (Raleigh, N.C.), and the sophomore tandem of Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.) and Arie Hefter (Birmingham, Ala.). Lyons and Hefter each added another win during doubles play as well.
Davidson will conclude its fall portion of the 2008-09 schedule by heading to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the ITA Regional Championships, Oct. 16-19.
