DAVIDSON, N.C. – Returning all five starters and 11 letterwinners from a team that won a school-record 29 games last season, coach Bob McKillop has crafted a schedule for the 2007-08 Davidson Wildcats that will challenge and inspire the players, thrill the fans – and keep the coaches up late at night devising ways to play against some of the best teams in the nation.
With Associate Head Coach Matt Matheny working the telephones all spring and summer, Davidson has come up with a schedule that includes games in Bobcat Arena against North Carolina and Duke, plus road games at UCLA (John Wooden Classic), North Carolina State and Charlotte. The Wildcats will also be traveling to Western Michigan for a Dec. 29 game.
In addition to the difficult non-conference schedule, the twice-defending Southern Conference champions will play 20 SoCon games during the regular season, and then attempt to defend its league championship in the conference tournament in North Charleston, S.C., March 7-10. The additional conference games means that Davidson will open its league schedule on Nov. 26 with a game at rival Appalachian State. Its one of the earliest starts to the conference season ever for a Davidson team.
The expanded conference schedule also means that teams will be playing each other without much time elapsing from the first game. For instance, Davidson plays at UNCG on Feb. 13 and hosts the Spartans six days later.
Andy Katz, a college basketball writer for ESPN.com, wrote in early August that Davidson's non-conference schedule is so tough that it could earn the Wildcats an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament if they fail to win the SoCon tourney in March. It's just an indication of the kind of respect and attention that McKillop's program is garnering nationally.
Another indication is the fact that Davidson will make nine television appearances, including four broadcasts on the ESPN family of networks. The first appearance, Davidson's “A Night With the Cats,” which will mark the beginning of the school's 100th season of basketball, airs on ESPNU Oct. 12.
Coach McKillop says Davidson's schedule is developed after “we seek input from our players. The decision to have a challenging schedule came after input from everyone in our program. This schedule gives us an opportunity to be on a national stage and provides an exciting challenge for our players, and a winter of excellent basketball for our fans. It also serves as valuable exposure for Davidson College. Our players know that they will have to be at their best to succeed against a schedule this challenging. I sense they're very excited about it, as are the coaches.”
January will be a bruising month for the Wildcats, as they play 10 conference games beginning on Jan. 3 against Georgia Southern at John Belk Arena. Six of those 10 league games in January will be on the road.
There will be only one non-conference game for Davidson after the Dec. 29 game at Western Michigan. That will come on Feb. 23 against an opponent to be named, as the Wildcats will play in the ESPN “Bracket Buster” series, which could give the program even more national television exposure.
