DAVIDSON, N.C. – Jason Richards of the Davidson men's basketball team has been nominated for the 2008 Bob Cousy Award as announced Wednesday. The Bob Cousy Award annually recognizes the top point guard in college basketball.
Richards, a senior from Barrington, Ill., finished the 2006-07 campaign second nationally in assists (249) and assists per game (7.3). A first-team all-league selection by SoCon head coaches, Richards led the Southern Conference in assists, assists per game and assists-to-turnover ratio, while rating 12th in scoring (13.5), fourth in free-throw percentage (.811) and minutes per game (34.3), plus eighth in steals per outing (1.5).
A 2007 SoCon all-tournament team member, Richards had six contests with 10 or more set ups and broke Davidson's single-game record and tied the SoCon mark with 19 assists against Mount Saint Mary. To go along with his three double-doubles via points and assists last year, Richards earned MVP honors at the Arizona State Sleep America Classic after leading the Wildcats to wins over Ohio and Arizona State.
Ranked tied for sixth on Davidson's career assists chart with 370, Richards' mark of 249 a year ago set a new school single-season standard.
At Georgia Southern on Jan. 23, Richards scored 16 straight first-half points for the Wildcats in their 101-92 come-from-behind win over the Eagles. The tri-captain finished with a career-high 32 points going 8-for-13 from the floor including four treys and a 12-for-14 performance from the charity stripe.
The only Davidson player to start all 34 contests in 2006-07, Richards recorded double figures in 26 contests and scored 20 or more points on six occasions, including a pair of 20-point affairs in the SoCon Tournament.
To cap off his junior slate, Richards along with fellow backcourt mate Stephen Curry were named to the 2006-07 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) University Division All-State Men's Basketball first team.
The 2007-08 Wildcats return five starters and 11 letterwinners from last year's NCAA Tournament squad that concluded the 2006-07 campaign 29-5 overall and 17-1 in the SoCon. To go along with their school-record wins total, the Wildcats enjoyed a pair of double-digit winning streaks and closed the year winning 25 of their last 27.
Nominees for the Bob Cousy Award presented by The Hartford are solicited through the College Sports Information Directors of America (COSIDA) and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).
Previous winners of the award include Jameer Nelson from St. Joseph 's University (2004), Raymond Felton from the University of North Carolina (2005), Dee Brown from the University of Illinois (2006) and Acie Law IV of Texas A&M (2007).
