Robinson Stars in Womens 71-62 Quarterfinal Win Over Wofford

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Sophomore Mercedes Robinson (Mansfield, Texas) led three Wildcats in double figures with 14 points and the Davidson women's basketball team improved to 6-5 in the quarterfinals with a 71-62 win over sixth-seeded Wofford on Thursday afternoon at the Southern Conference Tournament at the North Charleston Coliseum. Davidson continues it school-best run for wins in a season with its 23rd to only seven defeats, while Wofford ends the year at 13-16 overall.
Davidson advances to the semifinals for the third straight year, fourth time in the past five years and seventh time overall.
Robinson guided the Davidson bench to a 33-27 scoring advantage over Wofford with her team-high 14 points and a game-high nine boards. The sophomore post player scored eight of her 14 in the second half when Davidson pushed their lead out to 10 points, 58-48, on a layup by Robinson at the 5:54 mark.
Juniors Danielle Hemerka (Blackwood, N.J.) and Katie Hamilton (Lilburn, Ga.) also made sure that the Wildcats would be moving onto the semifinals with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Before the game, Hamilton was honored for earning a nod on the coaches and media All-SoCon team. Despite being saddled with foul trouble all game, Hamilton was 3-of-6 from the field and perfect 2-for-2 from three-land.
Joining Hamilton on the All-SoCon media team was senior Tia Washington (Charlotte, N.C.). The senior extended her assist streak of at least one or more in a game to 62 straight after dishing out one to go along with her five points.
Jennifer Weurding of Wofford led an early Terrier charge to open the game by scoring 11 of the Terriers' first 13 points as Davidson trailed 13-7. She nailed all three of her three-pointers and four of her six shots overall, but the Wildcats held her to only five more points the rest of the game.
Davidson marched back behind its defense and bench, eventually taking control of the half and game. Tied at 20-20, Davidson closed the half out on a 14-6 run and headed into the lockerroom up by the count of 34-26.
The Wildcat bench netted 21 points in the half, led by sophomore Kelly Gassie's (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) seven points. Davidson's defense forced 18 first-half turnovers that resulted in 17 points. For the game, the Wildcats forced 28 miscues and pocketed 13 steals.
Davidson also took advantage of its trips to the free throw line in the first half, draining 12 of it 15 attempts in the half.
Wofford closed to within three, 43-40, at the 13:38 mark of the second half, but a layup by Robinson and back-to-back buckets from Hemerka pushed the lead back out to nine at 49-40.
The Wildcats were never threatened again, answering a Wofford bucket with one of their own each time and maintaining at least a seven-point advantage the rest of the way. They got their biggest lead of the game on two free throws from senior Jessica Mitchell (Wilkesboro, N.C.) with 17 ticks on the clock that sealed the 71-62 victory for Davidson.
Besides Weurding's 16 points, Wofford placed two other players in double digits. Kelsi Koenig and K.C. Correll chipped in with 13 and 10 points each. Koenig earned a team-best eight boards as Wofford finished with a 35-32 advantage on the glass. The Terriers ended up shooting 46.7 percent from the field, thanks to a even 50 percent in the second half.
Davidson will try to get over the hump of its semifinal history as well as break its 16-game series skid against Chattanooga when they play the Mocs tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. The Mocs earned a the quarterfinals win over Appalachian State on Wednesday.
