DAVIDSON, N.C. -- After three days of trials in Dallas, Texas, Stephen Curry of the Davidson College men's basketball team is one of 12 players selected to represent the United States in the 2007 FIBA U19 World Championship in Novi Sad, Serbia July 12-22.
The following were named to the USA U19 World Championship squad: Darrell Arthur (Kansas / Dallas, Texas); Michael Beasley (Notre Dame Prep, Mass./ Frederick, Md.); Patrick Beverley (Arkansas / Chicago, Ill.): Matt Bouldin (Gonzaga / Highlands Ranch, Colo.); Stephen Curry (Davidson / Charlotte, N.C.); Jonny Flynn (Niagara Falls H.S. / Niagara Falls, N.Y.); Donte' Greene (Towson Catholic H.S. / Baltimore, Md.); DeAndre Jordan (Bellaire Episcopal H.S. / Humble, Texas); David Lighty (Ohio State / Cleveland, Ohio); Raymar Morgan (Michigan State / Canton, Ohio); Tajuan Porter (Oregon / Detroit, Mich.); and Deon Thompson (North Carolina / Torrance, Calif.).
Along with facing a 2007 FIBA U19 World Championship field comprised of 16 of the world's best U19 teams, USA Basketball announced June 26 it would compete against the China Senior National Team, featuring Houston Rockets all-star Yao Ming and expected NBA draft selection Yi Jianlian, on July 1. Prior to FIBA U19 World Championship next month, the USA squad will play three games against international competition as part of the July 5-7 Global Games at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
Eight of the USA's team members completed their collegiate freshman season in 2006-07, while the other four just wrapped up their high school senior campaign. DePaul University head coach Jerry Wainwright, who served as an assistant for the 2006 U18 USA National Team, will lead the 2007 U19 USA World Championship Team this summer.
The son of former NBA sharpshooter Dell Curry, Stephen (pronounced STEFF-in) concluded his debut season in a Wildcat uniform with 730 points (21.5 ppg.) to lead the Southern Conference and an NCAA freshman single-season record 122 three-pointers.
Wildcat standouts Dick Snyder (1965-66) and Mike Maloy (1968-69) are the only two players in the history of Davidson's program to score more points in a single season than Curry. Along with ranking among national leaders in three statistical categories (scoring, three-pointers made and threes per game), Curry reached 20 points in 19 of the 33 games in which he scored double figures.
The three-time SoCon Player of the Week broke five Davidson school records during his debut campaign, including the single-season scoring record for points by a freshman. Just the third Wildcat ever to receive SoCon Freshman of the Year honors, Curry connected on 40.8 percent (122-299) of his attempts from long range, while pacing the league in free throw percentage with a clip of 85.5 percent (124-145).
To go along with his remarkable shooting totals, he averaged 4.6 boards per game from his guard position. In addition to earning SoCon first-team honors and league tournament MVP, Curry was selected SI.com All-Mid-Major Honorable Mention, as well as to the NABC District 5 Second Team.
The Charlotte native was also tabbed by Collegehoops.net as its Mid-Major Freshman of the Year and to the All-Freshman Second Team, Mid-Major All-Freshman, and Mid-Major All-American units. CollegeInsider.com selected Curry as its Mid-Major Freshman of the Year, while including him on its Freshmen All-America Team and Mid-Major All-America Team. He was also voted to the SN/Rivals.com All-Freshman Team in addition to earning SoCon Player of the Month honors three times.
The USA player selections were made by the USA Basketball Men's Collegiate Committee, chaired by Syracuse University (N.Y.) head coach Jim Boeheim. Also members of the USA Basketball Men's Collegiate Committee are NCAA appointees Fran Dunphy (head coach, Temple University, Pa.); Tom Izzo (head coach, Michigan State University); Ernie Kent (head coach, University of Oregon) and Tubby Smith (head coach, University of Minnesota); NABC appointee Bill Self (head coach, University of Kansas); NAIA appointee Bob Burchard (head coach, Columbia College, Mo.); NJCAA appointee Scott Schumacher (head coach, Kilgore C.C., Texas), and athlete representatives Steve Wojciechowski (1995 Junior World Championship team / assistant coach, Duke University, N.C.) and A.J. Wynder (1995 Pan American Games team / head coach, Nassau Community College, N.Y.).
