DAVIDSON, N.C. — Stephen Curry of the
Davidson
College men's basketball team has been invited to the 2007 U19 USA National Team training camp while fellow Wildcats Max Paulhus Gosselin and William Archambault will display their talents at the Canadian National Team tryouts.
The USA U19 National Team Trials, featuring approximately 35 of the nation's top 19-and-unders, will begin June 28 in
Dallas, Texas. Select Quebec-based athletes will workout for National Team coaches at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, May 25 in effort to earn a spot in tryout camp (June 15) for the Development or Senior Men's National Teams.
“To have the opportunity to represent your country and wear the name of your country across your chest is one of the truly great experiences,” said Davidson head coach Bob McKillop, who just completed his 18th season at the helm. “I'm certain that Stephen, Max and Will are going to work very hard to earn the chance to be part of their respective teams.”
DePaul
University head coach Jerry Wainwright, who served as an assistant for the 2006 U18 USA National Team will lead the 2007 U19 USA World Championship Team at this summer's FIBA U19 World Championship in
Novi Sad, Serbia July 12-22.
The son of former NBA sharpshooter Dell Curry, Stephen (pronounced STEFF-in) concluded his debut season in a Wildcat uniform with 730 points (21.5 ppg.) to lead the Southern Conference and an NCAA freshman single-season record 122 three-pointers. Wildcat standouts Dick Snyder (1965-66) and Mike Maloy (1968-69) are the only two players in the history of Davidson's program to score more points in a single season than Curry.
Along with ranking among national leaders in three statistical categories (scoring, three-pointers made and threes per game), Curry reached 20 points in 19 of the 33 games in which he scored double figures. The three-time SoCon Player of the Week broke five Davidson school records during his debut campaign, including the single-season scoring record for points by a freshman.
Just the third Wildcat ever to receive SoCon Freshman of the Year honors, Curry connected on 40.8 percent (122-299) of his attempts from long range, while pacing the league in free throw percentage with a clip of 85.5 percent (124-145). To go along with his remarkable shooting totals, he averaged 4.6 boards per game from his guard position.
In addition to earning SoCon first-team honors and league tournament MVP, Curry was selected SI.com All-Mid-Major Honorable Mention, as well as to the NABC District 5 Second Team. The
Charlotte native was also tabbed by Collegehoops.net as its Mid-Major Freshman of the Year and to the All-Freshman Second Team, Mid-Major All-Freshman, and Mid-Major All-American units. CollegeInsider.com selected Curry as its Mid-Major Freshman of the Year, while including him on its Freshmen All-America Team and Mid-Major All-America Team. He was also voted to the SN/Rivals.com All-Freshman Team in addition to earning SoCon Player of the Month honors three times.
Paulhus Gosselin, a 6-6 guard/forward from
Carignan, Quebec, started 33-of-34 contests for Davidson as a sophomore averaging 4.9 ppg and 3.2 rpg while shooting a team-best 50 percent (64-128) from the floor.
Second on the club in blocks this past season, Paulhus Gosselin scored in double figures on four occasions, three of which came consecutively during the Wildcats' perfect 8-0 record during the month of December. Against Chattanooga (Dec. 18), he poured in a career-high 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting including four buckets from long range and grabbed six rebounds in the 12-point victory over the Mocs.
A former high school teammate of Paulhus Gosselin, Archambault appeared in 33 games as a freshman averaging just under eight points per outing. A native of
St. Hubert, Quebec and a product of Champlain St-Lambert, Archambault was second on the club in three-pointers connecting on 58-of-160 attempts.
Ranking among league leaders in treys per contest, Archambault scored in double figures nine times during his debut season, including a personal-best 19 points in Davidson's home-opening win (100-89) over Chicago-Illinois Nov. 15. Against Maryland in the 2007 NCAA Tournament, he came off the bench to drill three buckets from deep, giving him eight games during the 2006-07 season with three or more long-range jumpers in a contest.
This year's trip to the NCAA Tournament was the ninth for Davidson and fourth under Coach McKillop, whose club concluded the 2006-07 campaign 29-5 overall and 17-1 in the SoCon. To go along with their school-record wins total, the Wildcats enjoyed a pair of double-digit winning streaks and closed the year winning 25 of their last 27.
