KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- On the heels of receiving three Southern Conference postseason honors, Stephen Curry of the Davidson College men's basketball team has been named to the 2007 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division I All-District 5 second team. The 15 all-district teams are selected by members of the NABC association.
Earlier in the week, Curry was tabbed SoCon Freshman of the Year as well as selected to both the all-conference and all-freshman squads. Curry, a native of Charlotte, N.C., is leading the SoCon in scoring at 20.7 points per game, which is also the second highest by a first-year player nationally behind Kevin Durant of Texas.
The 6-1 shooting guard has 107 three-pointers this season, tied for third most by a freshman ever at the Division I level and just three shy of breaking the record set by Keydren Clark of St. Peter's in 2003.
Along with ranking among national leaders in three statistical categories (scoring, three-pointers made and threes per game), Curry reached 20 points in 15 of the 29 games in which he scored double figures.
The three-time SoCon Player of the Week and November's Player of the Month broke five Davidson school records during his debut campaign including the single-season scoring record for points by a freshman.
Just the third Wildcat ever to receive the conference's top-freshman honor, Curry hit 41.1 percent of his attempts from long range while pacing the league in free throw percentage with a clip of 84.9 percent (101-of-119).
Joining Curry on the second team included a pair of SoCon players in Kyle Hines (UNC Greensboro) and Dontaye Draper (College of Charleston) along with Arizona Reid (High Point) and James Mays (Clemson).
The NABC All-District 5 first team was made up of J.R. Reynolds (Virginia), Sean Singletary (Virginia), Tyler Hansbrough (North Carolina), Brandon Wright (North Carolina) and Josh McRoberts (Duke), all members of teams that compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Each of the 150 players named to the 15 all-district teams are now eligible for the NABC Division I All-America teams that will be announced at the conclusion of the 2006-07 regular season.
Davidson has won 11 straight for the second time in 2006-07 and 23 of its last 24 to sit 27-4 overall and 17-1 in the SoCon. The top-seeded Wildcats will meet #5 Furman in the semifinals of the 2007 SoCon Men's Basketball Tournament Friday in a 6 p.m. tip at the North Charleston Coliseum.
