DAVIDSON, N.C. - A week after earning tournament MVP honors and leading the Davidson Wildcats to their second consecutive Southern Conference Championship, Stephen Curry has been selected Mid-Major Freshman of the Year and voted to the Mid-Major All-American Squad by Collegehoops.net. He was also named second-team all-freshman and to the Mid-Major All-Freshman unit by the world's largest independent college basketball site.
Curry, a native of Charlotte, N.C., leads the SoCon in scoring at 21.2 points per game, which is also the second highest by a first-year player nationally behind Kevin Durant of Texas. The 6-1 shooting guard has 117 three-pointers this season, the most-ever made by a freshman in a single season at the NCAA Division I level. He broke Keydren Clark of St. Peter's mark of 109 in Davidson's semifinal victory over Furman at last week's SoCon Tournament.
Along with ranking among national leaders in three statistical categories (scoring, three-pointers made and threes per game), Curry reached 20 points in 18 of the 32 games in which he scored double figures. The three-time SoCon Player of the Week and November's Player of the Month broke five Davidson school records during his debut campaign, including the single-season scoring record for points by a freshman.
Just the third Wildcat ever to receive SoCon Freshman of the Year honors, Curry has connected on 41.1 percent (117-285) of his attempts from long range, while pacing the league in free throw percentage with a clip of just under 85 percent. To go along with his impressive shooting totals, he averaged 4.6 boards per game from his guard position.
Since postseason honors were released last week, Curry has also received the following: SoCon Freshman of the Year (Coaches and Media), All-SoCon (Coaches and Media), SoCon All-Freshman Team (Coaches), SoCon Tournament MVP, SoCon All-Tournament Team, NABC All-District 5 Second Team, SI.com's All-Mid-Major Honorable Mention and CollegeInsiders.com Freshmen All-America.
With a school record 29 wins and having won 13 straight and 25 of its last 26 contests, Davidson claimed its ninth SoCon Tournament Title with a 72-65 defeat of College of Charleston (March 3), and the fourth under Coach Bob McKillop in his 18 years at the helm. The 29-4 Wildcats will find out their seed and destination for the 2007 NCAA Tournament tomorrow evening.
