DAVIDSON, N.C. — Coming off their eighth straight victory and 20th out of their last 21 games, the Davidson Wildcats look to clinch the Southern Conference's No. 1 seed in a 7 p.m. Senior Day contest with the Furman Paladins Wednesday at John Belk Arena.
Davidson enters 24-4 overall and 15-1 in the SoCon, two games clear of Appalachian State in the league standings with a pair of conference tilts remaining. The Wildcats' win over Wofford Monday broke a school record for regular season triumphs in a campaign.
Stephen Curry, who yesterday was named SoCon Player of the Week for the second consecutive week and third time this campaign, led the Wildcats with a game-high 28 points. The native of Charlotte, N.C., had a 10-for-20 shooting performance that included four baskets from beyond the arc and a perfect night at the line to run his consecutive makes total to 40 at home.
The frontcourt duo of Boris Meno (13, 11) and Thomas Sander (14, 10) each recorded their ninth and eighth career double-doubles, respectively, while Jason Richards scored 11 points and broke Davidson's single-season assists record of 208 with six set ups against the Terriers. Andrew Lovedale reached double figures for the third time in four games and was the fifth Wildcat to hit the 10-point plateau with just that in 17 minutes off the bench.
Furman comes in 14-13 on the season and in third place in the South Division with an 8-8 mark following a double-overtime setback to College of Charleston in Greenville, S.C., Monday. Despite the loss, Moussa Diagne paced two Paladins in double digits with a career-high 34 points on 14-of-24 shooting.
Earlier this season, Davidson overcame nine first-half treys by Furman to hold off the Paladins 71-63 at the Bi-Lo Center. The victory was the 10th consecutive of the Wildcats' previous streak that reached a season-best 12 games.
In that Jan. 10 battle, Sander finished with 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field, including a three-pointer, and was 5-for-7 from the charity stripe to lead the way for Davidson.
Davidson seniors' John Falconi and Lamar Hull will be recognized before tomorrow's affair.
