Curry Repeats as Southern Conference Player of the Week

DAVIDSON, N.C. — Stephen Curry of the Davidson College men's basketball team has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for the second consecutive week and third time this season as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
A 6-1 shooting guard from nearby Charlotte, N.C., Curry led the Wildcats to their seventh and eighth straight victories averaging 26.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.5 treys per outing, while shooting 51.6 percent (16-31) from the floor and 9-of-17 from long range.
Against Western Carolina on Feb. 17, the Charlotte Christian product scored a game-high 25 points with five triples, while missing just one of his nine attempts from the charity stripe. He also broke Davidson's single-season mark for three-point field goals made 1:18 into the contest, connecting on his 90th of 2006-07.
In Davidson's 80-73 win over Wofford, the freshman reached the 20-point barrier for the eighth straight contest with 28 points. Curry had a 10-for-20 shooting performance that included four baskets from beyond the arc and a perfect night at the line to run his consecutive makes total at Belk Arena to 40.
Curry has scored in double figures 27 times in his brief Wildcat career and took over the Southern Conference scoring lead last night upping his average to 20.7 points per game.
He currently ranks second nationally among freshman scoring leaders behind Kevin Durant of Texas, and is just 12 trifectas shy of setting a new NCAA record for three-point field goals made by a first-year player.
During Davidson's second longest streak of the season, Curry is averaging 25.4 points while shooting an impressive 52.3 percent (66-126) overall and has drained 36-of-76 (47.3 percent) from downtown.
Now winners of eight straight and 20 of its last 21, Davidson set a new school record for regular season wins improving to 24-4 on the campaign and 15-1 in conference affairs with its victory over Wofford Monday evening.
The Wildcats will return to action Feb. 22 when they entertain Furman in their home finale. Davidson seniors' John Falconi and Lamar Hull will be recognized before the 7 p.m. tip-off.
