DAVIDSON, N.C. -- After breaking and tying school marks in Wildcat victories over Chattanooga and College of Charleston, Stephen Curry has been named Southern Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
A native of nearby Charlotte, N.C., Curry broke Davidson's freshman single-season scoring record against the Mocs and tied the school's standard for three-point makes in a campaign last night at College of Charleston. Chris Dodds held the previous mark for scoring by a first-year player for 29 years, while Brendan Winters' clip of 89 buckets from long range was tallied during the 2004-05 slate.
For the week, the 6-1 shooting guard averaged 23.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.5 treys and 3.0 steals as the Wildcats cruised by Chattanooga, 87-57, Feb. 6 and knocked off the Cougars, 73-63.
Against the Mocs, he scored 24 points while connecting on 7-of-12 from the floor including four three-pointers and a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe to run his consecutive makes to 36 straight at home.
In Davidson's triumph Monday evening at Charleston, Curry finished with a game-high 24 points to lead the Wildcats to their sixth straight victory. He recorded 21 second-half points to reach the 20-point plateau for the 13th time this season. After going just 1-for-9 from the floor in the first stanza, Curry drilled 7-of-12 attempts, including three long range jumpers in the final 20 minutes of action.
During the Wildcats' most recent stretch, Curry is shooting an impressive 52.6 percent (50-95) from the floor and has drained 27-of-59 (45.8 percent) treys for an average of 4.5 per game. He has also averaged 25.0 points per game and upped his scoring average from 18.8 to 20.2.
To go along with his November Player of the Month selection, Curry is now just the second player in the league to earn SoCon weekly honors twice in 2006-07. Davidson has claimed the award on four different occasions this year -- Curry (Nov. 21& Feb. 13), Thomas Sander (Dec. 5), Jason Richards (Dec. 19).
The Wildcats have won 18 of the last 19 contests to run their overall record to 22-4 and 13-1 in SoCon play. Davidson returns to action Saturday, Feb. 17 when it travels to Western Carolina at 7 p.m. A win against the Catamounts would give the Wildcats their eighth regular season divisional crown under head coach Bob McKillop.
