DAVIDSON, N.C. -- For the fourth time in his brief career, Stephen Curry of the Davidson men's basketball team has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for the week ending Dec. 2 as announced by the league office Monday afternoon.
A 6-3 shooting guard from Charlotte, N.C., Curry averaged 29.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals per outing, while connecting on 50.0 percent (22-44) of his attempts from the floor and draining 13-of-23 (56.5 percent) from behind the three-point arc.
In the Wildcats' triumph over Appalachian State Monday, Nov. 26 in both teams' SoCon opener, the sophomore scored a career-high 38 points, 26 of which came in the opening period. Curry set a Holmes Center scoring record and added six rebounds and four steals. He also tied his own school mark for treys in a contest with nine.
He was just two points shy of Fred Hetzel's school record of 28 points in a half, which he accomplished twice, the last coming against Furman in 1964. Curry was 10-for-14 from the field and 6-of-9 from three-point land, and one miss was a 40-footer as the buzzer sounded for halftime.
Saturday, in Davidson's six-point loss to No. 7 Duke at Bobcats Arena, Curry recorded 20 points on 8-of-17 shooting, including four buckets from deep. It was the fifth time this season he has hit the 20-point plateau and 24th time in his brief career. The Preseason Southern Conference Player of the Year has hit double figures in 33 consecutive contests and 39-of-40.
Curry currently ranks sixth nationally in scoring at 26.0 points per contest.
College of Charleston's Jermaine Johnson was also awarded the weekly honor after averaging 23.5 points and 12.0 rebounds per game.
