DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Wildcats look to make it two straight and four overall dating back to last season at home when they host Winthrop on Sunday. Davidson has won their last seven straight contests against the Eagles and own a 7-2 lead in the all-time series.
The Opening Tip
Davidson (3-2) will play host to the Winthrop Eagles at John M. Belk Arena on Sunday, Dec. 2 with gametime set for 2:30 p.m.
In addition to seeking its eighth straight win against Winthrop, Davidson will also be looking to duplicate last year's month of December when it went 6-0 on its way to a school-record 23 wins with its first game of the new month.
Also the Wildcats will be trying to help head coach Annette Watts become the all-time winningest coach in program history with a win on Sunday. Watts currently is tied with John Filar at 102 career wins.
The All-Time Series ...
...is 7-2 in favor of the Wildcats with them having won the last seven straight meetings. Last year saw Davidson take a 66-48 win at Winthrop on Nov. 22.
Scouting the Wildcats
The 'Cats started their home slate this season with a 62-56 conference win over Georgia Southern on Thursday. Junior Mercedes Robinson led the charge with her third straight, and sixth career, double-double as Davidson placed three players in double figures.
Robinson netted a team-best 15 points and had game-high 11 rebounds. She hit six of her 10 field goal attempts and added three more points at the charity stripe. It also marked the third straight game Robinson has led the team in scoring.
The sophomore duo of Alex Thompson and Julia Paquette followed Robinson with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Thompson had her usual all-around game at the point position with four rebounds and three assists. Paquette added six rebounds to go along with her 10 points and registered a career-high three blocks.
In their last meeting against Winthrop, three Wilcat players scored in double digits and held the Eagles to just 16 field goals made in 44 attempts. The senior duo of Danielle Hemerka and Honna Housley each scored 10 points last time out vs. the Eagles.
Robinson and freshman Kelsey Cary both pace the Wildcat offense with 12.2 and 11.6 points per game averages this season. Cary, who was held to two points on Thursday, has scored in double figures in three of the five games so far this year.
Scouting the Eagles
Winthrop, idle since its last game on Nov. 26, has matched its win total from a year ago when the Eagles went 6-26. Their latest win came against Norfolk State by the score of 68-63 to push their win streak to three. Winthrop built an 11-point second half lead with 5:18 to go in the game, but had to earn the win at the foul line as each team combined for 30 fouls in the second half. Winthrop made 13-of-21 foul shots in the second half and 18-for-27 for game.
Ashley Fann finished with a team-high 20 points, scoring eight of her 20 in the second half and also tied her career-best with six assists.
Tiffany Rodd finished with 15 points for the third straight game and also became the school's all-time leader in three-point buckets made with 145. She leads the team with a 12.8 points per game average and has hit 20 of her 48 three-pointers this season.
Prior to the Norfolk State win, Winthrop captured the program's first tournament title at the Jacksonville Invitational on Nov. 23-24 with wins over East Carolina and Jacksonville.
In the last meeting with the Wildcats, Franchesca Davenport led the Eagles with 13 points, five rebounds and three assists. For the season Davenport has started five of the eight games, while dropping in 5.3 points per game and four boards.
Of Winthrop's six wins this season, three of them have come on the road. Those victories came at South Carolina State, East Carolina, and recently, Norfolk State. The three wins is one more than all of last season when the Eagles were just 2-14.
The Eagles brought back nine of their 12 letterwinners from a season ago and all five starters as well.
