DAVIDSON, N.C. –– The Davidson women's basketball team seeks its ninth straight win against the Georgia Southern Eagles as they open Southern Conference play on Thursday night at Belk Arena. Last season, Davidson finished tied for second in the SoCon with a 13-5 record.
The Wildcats have a stretch of three straight home games against Georgia Southern, Winthrop (Sunday, Dec. 2) and East Tennessee State (Dec. 6).
The Opening Tip
The Wildcats will open SoCon play against Eagles on Thursday at Belk Arena with gametime set for 7 p.m. It marks the earliest the 'Cats have opened league play since the 2004-05 season when they played GSU on the 27th of November.
Davidson looks to continue its strong play at home since the opening of Belk Arena in 1992-93. The Wildcats have gone 104-70 during that time span, but more recently have fashioned a 47-21 record in coach Watts six years at Davidson. The 'Cats matched the school record last season with 10 home wins, tying the 1997-98 and 1998-99 squads for most home wins in a single season.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
GSU has a three-game lead on Davidson at 17-14, but the Wildcats have won the last eight straight meetings and 10 of the past 12. Last season they swept the two-game series by an average score of 72-51.
From the Bench, Head Coach Annette Watts
On the Charlotte game –
"The Charlotte game was our first with our players on school vacation. I know that sounds strange, but when we are not on our daily schedule it seems to disrupt all facets of our game. We did talk about game prep, but there are some things that teams have to learn by experience."
"Now our players understand the importance of preparing themselves to play, no matter what the week before has held for them. I know our team can perform at a much higher level and we hope to show that this weekend."
On the start of a three-game homestand –
"We're excited to be at home for awhile. The old saying 'there is no place like home' sure sounds great right now. Our players are comfortable in Belk Arena and our fans are the best around."
Scouting the Wildcats
The Wildcats recently fell in their annual cross-county battle with Charlotte by the count of 69-53 on Nov. 24. Davidson was led by junior Mercedes Robinson's double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds. It was Robinson's second straight double-double and fifth of her career. Freshman Kelsey Cary added 13 points off the bench for her third double-figure game in the past four contests.
Cary continues to pace the Wildcat attack with a 14 points per game average. She has hit over 50 percent of her field goals, including a 4-of-8 showing from behind the three-point arc.
Robinson (11.5 ppg) gives Davidson two players in double figures. Las year vs. the Eagles, Robinson combined for 19 points and 16 rebounds.
Cary (8 rpg), Robinson (6.5 rpg) and senior Danielle Hemerka (6.3 rpg) have provided the support on the glass as each is averaging over six boards a game.
Sophomore Alex Thompson continues to shine at the point position. In just her fourth career start at Charlotte, Thompson finished with eight points, five assists, three rebounds and just two turnovers in 37 minutes. She leads the team with 20 assists, while chipping in nearly eight points a game.
Scouting the Eagles
Georgia Southern, sitting at 2-4, dropped both of its contests last week at the UT San Antonio Thanksgiving Classic. Besides losing to UTSA (72-52), the Eagles fell to Southeastern Conference member Arkansas by the score of 77-51.
Shawnda Atwood and Ashley Rivens combined for 31 points vs. the Roadrunners, but it was not enough to overcome three UTSA players in double figures. Atwood scored a season-best 18 points to lead GSU and earned a spot on the all-tournament team.
Like Davidson, this is Georgia Southern's first conference game of the year after compiling a 7-11 league mark just a season ago. The Eagles finished 13-18 overall and return 10 of their 13 letterwinners, including all five starters, from last season's squad.
Leading the way so far this year has been Atwood with her 13.2 points per game average. She has paced the team in scoring five of the first six games. In addition to her 13 points a game, Atwood is also pulling down nearly six rebounds a contest and shooting 45 percent from the field.
The Eagles also return reigning SoCon Freshman of the Year Carolyn Whitney, who runs the point. She is third in the conference with 26 assists (4.33 per game), while chipping in seven points and hitting 50 percent of her shots from downtown. Last year vs. the Wildcats, Whitney scored a combined 28 points, pocketed five steals and hit five of her 10 three-balls.
The Eagles two wins this year have come against Stetson and Jacksonville State. GSU finished 5-8 last year on the road, with four of those wins coming in conference games.
Up Next
Davidson continues its three-game homestand with a non-conference game vs. Winthrop on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 2:30 p.m.
