Box Score
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte placed three players in double figures, led by Danielle Burgin's double-double, and the 49ers took the battle of two cross-country rivals by the score of 69-53 over the Davidson Wildcats on Saturday afternoon at Halton Arena in women's basketball action. Davidson, who had two players score in double digits, fell to an even .500 at 2-2, while Charlotte won its second straight to improve to 2-5.
Junior Mercedes Robinson (Baltimore, Md.) registered her second straight double-double, finishing with team bests of 16 points and 11 rebounds to pace the Wildcat scoring. The double-double was Robinson's fifth of her career.
Freshman Kelsey Cary (San Anselmo, Calif.) came off the bench to drop in 13 points in 24 minutes for her third double-figure game of the season.
It wasn't enough though, as Burgin led all scorers with 18 points and pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds for Charlotte. It was her fourth double-double of the year and it marked the sixth time in the first seven games she has hit for double figures. Traci Ray and Sabrina Gregory each finished with 13 points and combined for 11 assists.
Neither team shot particularly well from the field in the first half as Davidson missed 22 of its first 30 shots (23.7 percent), while Charlotte made just 12 of its 32 attempts (37.5 percent). The Wildcats shot better in the second half at a 41.4 percent, but finished just 20-for-59 for the game.
Senior Honna Housley (Riceville, Tenn.) knotted things up at 9-all with 12:17 left in the period, but Charlotte broke open the half with a 17-4 run to double up Davidson at 26-13 over the next eight minutes of play. Seven different 49ers scored during the eight-minute run.
Before the end of the half, Robinson cut the Charlotte lead to eight, 31-23, with a free throw, but a Ray three-pointer with 42 seconds left allowed the 49ers to take a 34-23 lead into halftime.
The second half was a half of missed opportunities for Davidson as it seemed every time it made a run, Charlotte answered with two quick buckets to maintain a double-digit lead and control the pace of the game. After Charlotte pushed its lead out to 14 at 38-24 to open the new stanza, the Wildcats chipped away to cut the advantage down to 42-36 on back-to-back three-balls from senior Danielle Hemerka (Blackwood, N.J.) and sophomore Alex Thompson (Asheville, N.C.) with 15:02 remaining.
Point guard Thompson had another solid game, pouring in eight points, dishing out five assists and contributing three boards in 37 minutes of play. Hemerka finished with six points and six boards.
But as soon as Davidson had some momentum, Charlotte used a 10-4 run to push the lead back out to 12 (52-40) with 11:21 left in the contest.
Later, Robinson and Cary each hit buckets inside to cut the lead to under double digits again, but Charlotte countered with two layups of its own to push the lead back to 12.
Cary brought the 'Cats within nine with two free throws (58-49) with 5:09 on the clock, but that was as close as Davidson would get the rest of the way. Charlotte used an 11-3 run to finish out the scoring and take home the 69-53 win.
Part of the Charlotte's counter attack against Davidson in the second half was its speed as the 49ers finished with 20 fast-break points, 12 of them in the second period.
Davidson returns home for the first time this season as it opens a three-game homestand at Belk Arena against conference foe Georgia Southern on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m in its first Southern Conference game of the 2007-08 campaign. The game will be the earliest the Wildcats have opened conference play since the 2004-05 team played the Eagles on Nov. 27.
