Charles "Lefty" Driesell to be Inducted in College Basketball Hall of Fame

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Former Davidson Head Coach Charles “Lefty” Driesell will be one of 11 members inducted into the new National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame Nov. 18, 2007, in Kansas City, Mo.
Ranked on Davidson's all-time list for coaching victories with 176, Driesell guided the Wildcats from 1960-69. During his nine-year tenure, Lefty led Davidson to the program's first postseason appearance in 1966, which was followed by two more trips to the NCAA Tournament in 1968 and 1969.
Driesell's last two Davidson teams got within a breath of making the Final Four. The 1967-68 team was 24-5, defeated St. John's and Columbia in the NCAA tournament before losing to North Carolina. In Driesell's last season at Davidson, the Wildcats were 27-3, ranked third in the nation in the last national poll, and beat Villanova and St. John's in the NCAA tournament. Davidson was one win away from the Final Four, but a two-point loss to nemesis North Carolina ended its season.
Driesell, who also coached at Maryland, James Madison and Georgia State, will be joined by six other coaches: Phog Allen of Kansas; Adolph Rupp of Kentucky; Henry Iba (Oklahoma A&M; John McLendon (Tennessee State); Norm Stewart (Missouri); and Guy Lewis of Houston.
Kareem Abdul Jabbar of UCLA heads the roster of player inductees. He's joined by Austin Carr (Notre Dame), Dick Groat (Duke) and Dick Barnett (Tennessee State).
Former Duke coach Vic Bubas, later the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference, will be inducted for his contributions to the game.
The National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame is located inside the College Basketball Experience, which is adjacent to the newly-constructed Sprint Center in downtown Kansas City.
