DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Coming off a school-record 23 wins and the program's first-ever postseason appearance with a trip to the Women's National Invitational Tournament, the Davidson women's basketball will seek to keep the winning ways going with the release of the 2007-08 schedule as announced by head coach Annette Watts today.
Of the Wildcats' 29 games this year, they will face 11 teams who garnered postseason bids, including four who qualified for the NCAA Tournament. In addition, the 'Cats will play two in-season tournaments and have their usual 18-game Southern Conference slate.
“What a schedule,” exclaimed Watts, who is just four wins away from becoming the all-time winningest coach in women's basketball history. “It's definitely a challenging one, but you look back to last year's schedule, which was just as tough, and had the 'Cats not played this type schedule, we would not have received the NIT at-large bid. I'm looking forward to playing another good set of non-conference games because I'm a firm believer that a challenging non-conference schedule will make a team have the instincts and toughness it needs down the stretch, especially when it comes to conference games.”
Davidson is no stranger to playing a tough non-conference schedule to prepare itself for SoCon play. During Watts' six-year tenure at Davidson, the Wildcats have played the likes of Duke, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Michigan State, Missouri, Gonzaga, Georgia and Montana.
The Wildcats can be expected to challenge for the league title once again after finishing tied for second at 13-5 in 2006-07. Davidson returns nine letterwinners from a team that went a school-best 23-9 overall, including redshirt senior Katie Hamilton (Liburn, Ga.) who earned a spot of the all-conference second-team last year. The former SoCon Freshman of the Year led the 'Cats in scoring for the third time in her career with an average of 10.7 points per game and was tops in the league in three-point accuracy, nailing 38.9 percent of her shots from behind the arc. Davidson also returns two former All-Freshman Team members in senior Danielle Hemerka (Blackwood, N.J.) and Kelly Gassie (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.), each of whom saw action in at least 31 of the Wildcats' 32 games last season.
Looking to build on last year's unprecedented success, Davidson faces an early test when it opens up at Georgia Tech on Nov. 9, followed by the Carolina First Classic in Asheville, N.C. and a road contest against cross-county rival Charlotte after Thanksgiving. Davidson will be facing the Yellow Jackets, who sported a school-record 21 wins last year and reached the second-round of the NCAA tournament, for the first time since the 2003-04 campaign.
Davidson then visits UNC Asheville in the first game of the Carolina First Classic on Nov. 16th. Also attending the Classic will be Georgia State and Gardner-Webb.
On Nov 24, the Wildcats face their cross-county rival Charlotte as they will be seeking their second straight win against the 49ers after securing a 75-69 hom victory against them a year ago. Charlotte advanced to the second round of the WNIT last year.
The Wildcats will begin their quest for a SoCon title with a contest against Georgia Southern in Belk Arena to open its slate of home contests on Nov. 29. The 'Cats tied a school-record with 10 home wins last season and currently are riding a eight-game winning streak vs. the Eagles.
After a home contest against Winthrop, Davidson begins a string of five straight games against postseason participants that include visits to Georgia and Virginia on Dec. 9 and 20. The Lady Bulldogs will return three starters from last year's team, which finished 27-7 and advanced to the "Sweet 16" round of the NCAAs. The Cavaliers concluded the 2006-07 season with a trip to the third round of the WNIT and finished 19-15 overall.
Davidson finishes out its non-conference schedule and the month of December with a visit to Philadelphia, Pa., to play in its second in-season tournament at the St. Joe's Hawk Classic. The Wildcats will open the Classic against first-time opponent and WNIT participant, Auburn, on Dec. 28, before facing either St. Joseph's or New Jersey Institute of Technology on the 29th. St. Joseph's was also a participant in the WNIT and finished 19-14 a year ago.
Once the new year arrives, the Wildcats will be in the thick of SoCon play, starting on and ending with games against College of Charleston. Chattanooga has topped the SoCon in the regular season each of the past seven years, making the game at Chattanooga on Jan. 7 an early test. Should the regular-season crown come down to the final games, Davidson will have to fight its way through three road games of the last four contests, which will be on the road. The Wildcats wrapped up last year with a school-best 11-5 road mark.
The SoCon Tournament, Mar. 6-10, will again be held at the Charleston Coliseum in Charleston, S.C.
