Curry and Rebounding Lead Wildcats to 88-58 Victory at Elon

ELON, N.C. – Davidson dominated the boards 60-32 and got 25 points from Stephen Curry for the second consecutive outing as the Wildcats cruised to an 88-58 victory over Elon in men's basketball action Tuesday evening at Alumni Gymnasium. The Wildcats have won 15 of their last 16 dating back to their first meeting with the Phoenix earlier in the campaign as they improve to 19-4 overall and 10-1 in SoCon play. With the loss, Elon falls to 5-15 and 3-7.
Curry, a freshman from Charlotte, N.C., hit 9-of-17 attempts from the floor including four treys to lead four Wildcats in double figures. It also marks this 10th time this season he has scored at least 20 points in a contest.
For the second time this campaign against tonight's opponent a pair of Wildcat post players finished with a double-double. Both Boris Meno (12 pts, 10 rebs) and Thomas Sander (18 pts, 13 rebs) recorded the sixth of their careers. In the two games combined this year against the Phoenix, Sander has scored 48 points and grabbed 27 rebounds.
Jason Richards also added 13 points while pulling down eight rebounds for Davidson.
Curry started and finished a 13-2 Davidson run to open the contest with a trey and jumper in the lane at the 16:53 mark forcing the Phoenix to burn a 30- second timeout. The Wildcats continued to slowly stretch their advantage and went to the break up 39-23 thanks to Curry's third long range bucket of the half with just four seconds remaining.
The Wildcat shooting guard led all-scorers at intermission with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Other highlights in the opening 20 minutes of action included five assists from Sander, which broke his previous career-high of three that was set at Missouri earlier this season. The 6-8 forward also pulled down eight boards as the Wildcats' controlled the glass 27-17 in the period.
Davidson opened the second frame just like the first as Max Paulhus Gosselin's only bucket of the affair completed a 9-2 streak to push the game to 48-25. The Wildcats' largest margin came in the last minute as freshman Dan Nelms nailed his first career three to give Davidson a 32-point (88-56) advantage.
The lone bright spot for Elon was senior LeVonn Jordan, who finished with 24 points.
Davidson concluded the evening 30-of-71 (42.3 percent) from the floor while holding the Phoenix to just 36.5 percent (23-of-63).
Davidson returns home for a 2 p.m. tip-off with North Division co-leader UNC Greensboro Saturday at Belk Arena. The SoCon affair between the Wildcats and Spartans will be televised on SportSouth. Elon will travel to Spartanburg, S.C., to battle Wofford at 7 p.m.
