DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Coming off a 79-54 win over The Citadel Tuesday evening, the Davidson Wildcats will put three streaks on the line Saturday afternoon against the visiting Appalachian State Mountaineers at 2 p.m.
The Wildcats hold the nation¹s second longest run for consecutive victories with 12 straight, have claimed their last 11 home contests, and are still perfect on the SoCon campaign with a 7-0 record.
In its last outing, Davidson drilled 12 buckets from deep and posted five players in double figures including Jason Richards' third career double-double with 10 points and 10 assists to run its overall mark to a league-best 16-3.
Offensively, the Wildcats are led by freshman Stephen Curry, who ranks second among SoCon leaders in scoring at 19 points per game and has reached the 10-point mark in 18 of his first 19 career games.
Other Davidson players averaging double digits on the 2006-07 season include tri-captains Thomas Sander (14.9 ppg./5.8 rpg.), Boris Meno (11.1/ 8.2 rpg.) and Jason Richards (13.5 ppg./7.8 apg.). Richards, the Wildcat point guard is also first nationally in total assists (149) and second in set ups per outing behind Jared Jordan of Marist.
As a club, the Wildcats find themselves among the nation's best in Scoring Offense (81.2/18th), 3-Pointers Made (181/T-7th), 3-Pointers Per Game (9.5/11th), Rebounds Per Game (41.4/6th) and Free Throw Percentage (.758/12th).
Davidson has won five straight against the Mountaineers including last year's 102-69 triumph in Boone, N.C., to open the SoCon slate on Dec. 3, 2005. These two squads have met 61 times on the hardwood with the Wildcats holding a 33-28 edge in the all-time series.
Appalachian State enters the Hall of Fame Day affair with the Wildcats 13-5 and 5-2 in the SoCon following an 80-76 setback at North Division foe UNC Greensboro Thursday evening. Despite dropping just their second contest in their last 10 outings, the Mountaineers had three players in double figures.
Like Davidson, the Mountaineers claimed a tournament title just prior to the Christmas break. ASU won the San Juan Shootout after defeating Virginia and UCF before knocking off Vanderbilt in the Championship.
Preseason All-Conference selection D.J. Thompson is tops on the Mountaineer club in scoring at just over 14 points per game. He leads the team in assists and ranks third in the SoCon with a 5.4 average.
The Wildcats' game with Appalachian State will be broadcast by the Davidson Sports Network and Sirius Satellite Radio (Ch. 153) with John Kilgo providing all the action over the airwaves. Coverage will begin 30 minutes before the opening tip at 2 p.m. For fans outside the radio signal, they can listen to the game via TEAMLINE on the internet (www.teamline.cc) or the phone (800-847-4600, team code 1143).
