DAVIDSON, N.C. – Appearances at the John Thompson Challenge and the Arizona State Classic along with road games at Duke and Missouri highlight the 2006-07 Davidson College men's basketball schedule that was recently announced by head coach Bob McKillop. The Wildcats are coming off their eighth trip to the NCAA Tournament and a 20-11 overall mark.
Davidson will open the campaign on Nov. 10 against Eastern Michigan in the John Thompson Foundation Challenge in Ann Arbor, Mich., before battling host Michigan the following day and concluding with Central Connecticut State on Sunday, Nov. 12.
The defending Southern Conference Tournament Champs will open their home slate in a 7 p.m. contest with Illinois-Chicago on Nov. 15. Following its meeting with the Flames, Davidson will head to Columbia, Mo., to face the Missouri Tigers of the Big 12 for the third time in as many seasons. Last year, the Wildcats recorded their second consecutive victory over Mizzou, 82-73, in front 4,221 fans at Belk Arena. In 2004, Davidson shot 60 percent from the floor and handed the Tigers their first loss at the newly opened Paige Center with an 84-81 upset victory.
After a Nov. 21 game with Colby, Davidson will head to Durham, N.C. to battle Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Nov. 25 meeting with the Blue Devils marks the 11th consecutive season these two in-state foes have met on the basketball court.
On Dec. 1, Davidson will play its first of 18 Southern Conference games when it welcomes Elon to campus. Three days later the Wildcats will travel up I-85 to face UNC Greensboro before entertaining cross-county rival Charlotte in the annual “Battle for the Hornets' Nest Trophy” on Saturday, Dec. 9. Last season the 49ers edged the Wildcats in a thrilling double overtime affair in Charlotte.
Following games with Mount Saint Mary's and at league opponent Chattanooga, Davidson will travel to its furthest destination of the season to take part in the Arizona State Hoops Classic on Dec. 21-22 in Tempe, Ariz. The Wildcats will open the holiday event against Ohio University before battling ASU or North Carolina A&T on the final day.
The Wildcats will begin the New Year with their first of 15 straight conference games to close out the 2006-07 regular season. The journey will start with a home contest against Bobby Cremins' College of Charleston Cougars on Jan. 6 before ending in Charleston, S.C., against The Citadel on Feb. 25.
Three days after its final regular-season contest, Davidson will head back to Charleston with hopes of defending its 2006 SoCon Tournament title. The postseason event will begin Feb. 28 with the opening round and conclude with Saturday's championship game on March 3 at the North Charleston Colesium. The winner of the tournament will earn the conference's automatic bid to the Big Dance.
