DAVIDSON, N.C — After winning two consecutive league games, Davidson will step out of conference and take to the floor Saturday evening against cross-county rival Charlotte, in the annual battle for the Hornets' Nest Trophy at John Belk Arena. The game between the Wildcats and 49ers in scheduled to tip at 7 p.m.
Last year, Leemire Goldwire scored 26 points including six trifectas, and Charlotte had two players finish with double-doubles to defeat the Wildcats, 85-81, in double overtime.
With Charlotte leading 73-68 in the first overtime, Brendan Winters made it a two-point game when he knocked down his third of four triples of the evening. Following a De'Angelo Alexander free throw with 29 seconds on the clock, the Wildcats' Jason Morton connected on a three-point play to tie the game and send it into its second extra session.
In the second overtime, Winters hit his final trey, which was followed by a Morton bucket to grab a 79-76 lead with 3:38 left. Charlotte responded with consecutive threes from Alexander and Marcus Bennett to grab the lead for good with just over a minute to play.
Winters led four Davidson players in double figures with 24 points, 21 coming after the break. Morton came off the bench to score 19 points, while Thomas Sander contributed his first career double-double (13, 10).
The Wildcats enter tonight's game with an overall record of 6-3 following a 66-63 victory at UNC Greensboro Monday evening. Freshman Stephen Curry led the way against the Spartans with 24 points, while Boris Meno finished with a career-high 19.
Curry continues to pace five Wildcats in double figures at 19.4 points per game. Sander, who was named the SoCon Player of the Week on Tuesday, is second on the club with an average of 15.4.
The 49ers were also last in action Monday as they defeated in-state foe UNC Asheville to improve to 3-4 on the young campaign.
Preseason All-America candidate De'Angelo Alexander leads the way for Charlotte averaging 18.9 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest.
Davidson is 8-19 all-time in the Hornets' Nest game, and won the first battle in the annual grudge match, 73-70 on Feb. 18, 1980.

- This is the 35th meeting between the two Mecklenburg County schools with Charlotte holding a 25-9 lead in the all-time series. The 49ers have also won nine of the past 10 meetings, with the lone Wildcat victory coming four years ago in Belk Arena, 75-56.
