TEMPE, Ariz. — Off to its best start since the 1995-96 season, Davidson has won five straight contests and looks to extend its streak with a pair of games in the 2006 Arizona State University Sleep America Classic.
The Wildcats will open the event with a 9 p.m. (MST) / 11 p.m. (EST) tip-off against the Ohio Bobcats on Thursday before playing either host Arizona State or North Carolina A&T on Friday afternoon.
Davidson's coming off a 92-80 victory at Southern Conference foe Chattanooga Monday evening to improve to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in the league. The backcourt trio of Stephen Curry, Max Paulhus Gosselin and Jason Richards combined for 71 points to lead a Davidson attack that knocked down 14 treys in the game.
Offensively, the Wildcats continue to place five players in double figures with Curry leading the way. The native of Charlotte, N.C., is second nationally among freshman at just over 20 points per outing. The 6-1 shooting guard is tops on the club with 45 treys and is fourth in rebounding with an average of 5.3.
Junior tri-captain Richards, who received a pair of weekly honors by the SoCon and CollegeInsiders.com earlier in the week, leads the nation in total assists with 100 and ranks just behind Jared Jordan (8.5) of Marist for the top spot in assists per game.
Ohio University was last in action on Dec. 10 when it defeated Saint Joseph's 79-72 in the NABC Classic to move its mark to 6-2 on the campaign.
Like Davidson, the Bobcats enter the two-day event with five players averaging double digits. Sonny Troutman leads the way at just over 16 points per game, while Bubba Walther and Jerome Tillman are a close second with marks of 15 each.
Arizona State carries an overall mark of 5-4 into the classic while the North Carolina A&T Aggies are 3-6.
The Wildcats' game with Ohio will be broadcast by the Davidson Sports Network with John Kilgo providing all the action over the airwaves.
