DAVIDSON, N.C — Coming off a thrilling 28-point victory over cross-county rival Charlotte in the annual “Battle for the Hornets' Nest Trophy,” Bob McKillop and his Davidson Wildcats will entertain Mount Saint Mary College in a 5 p.m. tip Friday at Belk Arena.
While ending the 49ers' three-year reign, Davidson had six players score in double figures, something that hadn't been done by a Wildcat club since Jan. 31, 2004.
Among those finishing in double digits were juniors Boris Meno (15 pts, 10 reb.) and Jason Richards (11 pts, 10 ast), who also recorded their second double-doubles of the 2006-07 campaign.
A native of Barrington, Ill., Richards leads the Southern Conference in assists and is fifth in the nation distributing 7.2 per game. As a team, the Wildcats also rank among national leaders in three-pointers per game (10th), free throw percentage (11th), assists per game (24th) and rebound margin (25th).
Freshman Stephen Curry continues to lead the squad in scoring with an average of just over 19 per outing. The 6-1 guard was named the SoCon Player of the Month for November after putting up impressive stats and collecting a number of honors to begin his career in a Davidson uniform.
Friday's opponent, Mount Saint Mary, enters the contest with a 2-6 overall mark, but has dropped six of seven after winning its season opener.
The Blue Knights, who compete at the Division III level are led by Preseason All-American Mike Hoyt, who is pouring in almost 25 points per game. Last year he set a new school single season record for points scored with 759.
The Wildcats' game with Mount Saint Mary will be broadcast by the Davidson Sports Network with John Kilgo providing all the action over the airwaves. Coverage will begin 30 minutes before the opening tip at 5 p.m. For fans outside the radio signal, they can listen to the game via TEAMLINE on the internet (www.teamline.cc) or the phone (800-847-4600, team code 1143).
