ANN ARBOR, MICH. — Under the direction of 18th year head coach Bob McKillop, the Davidson Wildcats will open their 2006-07 season at 6 p.m. Friday against Eastern Michigan in the opening round of the John Thompson Foundation Challenge on the University of Michigan campus.
The Wildcats return one starter from last year's SoCon Tournament champions that finished the 2005-06 campaign 20-11 overall and 10-5 in conference play. Last year's trip to the NCAA Tournament was the eighth in program history and third under McKillop, who is the all-time winningest coach in Davidson and SoCon history with a career mark of 282-213.
This year's club will turn to the leadership of junior tri-captains Boris Meno, Jason Richards and Thomas Sander, all of whom played in each of Davidson's 31 contests a year ago.
Meno, a 6-8 forward from Paris, France, led the club in rebounding (6.6 rpg) and blocked shots (18) last season. In 2005-06, Meno finished ninth among SoCon leaders in rebounds per game and fourth in total rebounds with 205.
In 15.1 minutes per game as a sophomore, Richards shot an impressive 48.9 percent from his point guard position and distributed 92 assists to just 47 turnovers. The Barrington, Ill., native also added 4.5 points per contest and knocked down 40 of his 49 attempts (81.6 percent) from the charity stripe.
With a career shooting percentage of 64 percent, Sander is the leading returning scorer from last year's team with 6.5 points per game. In 12 starts to close out the season, the 6-8 forward from Cincinnati, Ohio was also one of three frontcourt players to finish the 2005-06 season with a rebounding average of at least six.
In addition, the Wildcats welcome a very talented freshman class highlighted by Stephen Curry (Charlotte, N.C.) and William Archambault (St. Hubert, Quebec).
Against the University of Guelph (Nov. 3), the Wildcats' lone exhibition contest, Curry led four Davidson players in the double-figures with 27 points. The Charlotte Christian product also added seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals.
The Wildcats cruised to an 84-64 victory over the Gryphons and also got double-digit scoring performances from Meno (18), Richards (16) and Archambault, who chipped in 13 off the bench.
Eastern Michigan returns two starters from last year's club that finished the 2005-06 season with a 7-21 overall record and 3-15 mark in the MAC.
Like Davidson, the Eagles are very young with five freshman, three sophomores, five juniors and two seniors.
Carlos Medlock, a member of the MAC's All-Freshman Team a season ago, is leading returning scorer from last year's team at 11.5 ppg. He also compiled 3.2 assists and 2.0 rebounds per outing.
The Eagles defeated Wayne State 74-67 on Nov. 3 in their only preseason contest. Freshman Devon Dumes led the way for EMU with 17 points, while Medlock scored 13 points in 32 minutes of action.
Davidson will also battle tournament host Michigan in a 4 p.m. tip Saturday before concluding the event with Central Connecticut State on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m.
The Wildcats' regular season opener will be broadcast by WEGO 1410 AM with John Kilgo providing all the action over the airwaves. Coverage will begin 30 minutes before the 6 p.m. opening tip.
