DAVIDSON, N.C. — Freshman Stephen Curry of the Davidson men's basketball team has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 20 as announced by the league office Wednesday morning.
A 6-1 guard from Charlotte, N.C., Curry averaged 21.5 points per game, scoring a game-high 27 in the Wildcats' 100-89 victory over Illinois-Chicago on Nov. 15. He made 9-of-10 shots in the second half including three buckets from long range in Davidson's home opener.
Despite an 81-75 setback at Missouri over the weekend, the first-year product of Charlotte Christian recorded 16 points.
Son of former Virginia Tech star and NBA standout Dell Curry, the younger Curry has reached double figures in each of the Wildcats' first six contests, including three performances of 27 points or more. In just his second game in a Davidson uniform, Curry dropped 32 points on the Michigan Wolverines in the John Thompson Foundation Challenge. After combining for 63 points, 20 rebounds, 12 assists and six steals in three games at the JTFC, Curry was named to the All-Challenge team.
Against Colby last night at Belk Arena, the frosh broke Davidson school records for three-point field goals made and attempted, connecting on 9 of his 20 tries en route to a game-high 29 points.
On the young campaign, Curry is averaging 22.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists per outing. He currently ranks second in the SoCon in scoring and among league leaders in seven other statistical categories. His 25 three-pointers and 4.1 treys per contest are tops in the conference.
Davidson is 4-2 on the season following last night's 99-69 win over Colby College. The Wildcats return to action in a 7 p.m. tip at No. 9 Duke Saturday, Nov. 25.
