SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Coming off their eighth NCAA Tournament appearance and third under 18th year head coach Bob McKillop, the Davidson men's basketball team has been selected to finish fourth in the South Division standings of the Southern Conference as announced Wednesday morning at the league's annual media tip-off. The preseason poll was voted on by the SoCon's 11 head coaches.
The Wildcats' return one starter from last year's SoCon Tournament champions that finished the 2005-06 season 20-11 overall and 10-5 in conference play. Though junior Boris Meno is the only player back that started at least 50 percent of Davidson's contests, fellow tri-captains Jason Richards and Thomas Sander also return after logging 15.1 and 22.3 minutes per game, respectively.
In addition, the Wildcats also welcome a very talented class of newcomers, including red-shirt freshman Stephen Rossiter, who sat our last season due to a foot injury.
The College of Charleston received 10 first-place votes and was a unanimous choice to capture the South Division regular season crown ahead of the Furman Paladins. Georgia Southern earned the third place nod just in front of the Wildcats while Wofford and The Citadel were projected to round out a division that possesses three first-year coaches.
In the North Division, UNC Greensboro collected four first-place votes and a total of 44 points to edge Appalachian State, who was a close second with 40 points. Elon, last year's divisional champion, and Chattanooga each received a pair of top votes while Western Carolina was picked to finish in fifth place. Just 13 points separated the top four teams in the North Division poll.
Dontaye Draper of the College of Charleston and UNCG's Kyle Hines each received 94 points and were tabbed the SoCon's Preseason Players of the Year. The Courgars, Spartans, Georgia Southern and Furman each placed two student-athletes on the 10-member preseason club. Appalachian State and Elon landed one player each on the team.
Davidson will tip off its 2006-07 regular season Friday, Nov. 10 in the opening round of the John Thompson Classic against Eastern Michigan at 6 p.m. in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Wildcats will also battle tournament host Michigan (Nov. 11) and Central Connecticut State (Nov. 12) in the season-opening event.
Prior to their campaign opener, the Wildcats will host the University of Guelph in an exhibition contest Friday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. in Belk Arena on the Davidson campus.
The 2007 Southern Conference Men's Basketball Tournament will be held Feb. 28 - March 3 in North Charleston, S.C., with the champion receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
