Second Season

In his first season, Henderson helped Davidson improve from a sixth-place ranking to third place in the Pioneer Football League in kickoff returns with 19.8 yards per return. The ‘Cats also went from ranking eighth in the league in 2010 to third in 2011 in punt returns, averaging nearly six more yards per return last season.
Return specialist Toms Bernhards-Callahan averaged 11.6 yards a punt return (ranking ninth in the nation) and 19.6 yards a kick return. His 94-yard punt return for touchdown against Marist equaled the school record, set by George Hannen against Wofford in 1969. The return was the first punt return for a touchdown for Davidson since Ryan Hutto returned one 36 yards against Georgetown in 2000.
Under Henderson’s tutelage, Lanny Funsten led the PFL in receptions per game with 9.1 and receiving yards with 100.6 per game. Henderson comes to Davidson from Princeton University, where he spent the last four campaigns. He coached the defensive backs in his first two seasons and coached the running backs in his last two. Under his guidance, running back Jordan Culbreath earned All-Ivy Honorable Mention honors in 2010, while kicker Patrick Jacob was named first-team All-Ivy and punter Joe Cloud earned second-team accolades.
Henderson served as the wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator at Wayne State in Michigan from 2004-07, and in his last year there, the Warriors recorded their first winning record in 13 seasons. Prior to that, he spent two years as the defensive backfield coach for Division III power Mt. Union from 2002-04, where he coached All-America selection Chris Kern and helped lead Mt. Union to a national championship in 2002.
Henderson played football at Central Washington, where he graduated in 1996 with a degree in travel/tourism management. The 1995 CWU squad shared the NAIA title and was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Louisville, where he worked with the wide receivers and special teams during consecutive Conference USA championship seasons for the Cardinals. He earned his master’s of education in health and fitness from Louisville in 2002.
Henderson also participated in an NFL internship program with the Detroit Lions in the summer of 2005 and with the Washington Redskins in the summer of 2008.
