Men's Track and Field Geared Up for A-10 Outdoor Championships
5/3/2024 10:05:00 AM | Men's Track & Field
FAIRFAX, Va. – Under the direction of first-year head coach Matt Stuck, the Davidson College men's track and field team will travel to the 2024 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships in Fairfax, Va. this weekend.
The meet begins on Saturday (May 4) with field events starting the show at 10:30 a.m., the decathlon at 11:00 a.m., and track prelims kicking off at 2:30 p.m.
Davidson will have 17 individuals competing in the conference championship meet across 12 different events as well as two relay teams.
"We are excited to be heading to the Atlantic 10 Championships this weekend," said Director of Men's Track and Cross Country Matt Stuck. "We are looking forward to seeing how we stack up against the rest of the conference."
Heading into championship weekend, eleven 'Cats sit within the top-ten in their respective events on the A-10 Performance List. Jayden Smith and Grahm Breiter lead the way with top times in the 110-meter hurdles and the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Smith, the back-to-back A-10 110H champion, owns the fastest qualifying time in the conference by nearly a second and has the fifth-fastest time in the east region at 13.46 seconds. The Richmond, Va. native was named Co-Most Outstanding Performer at last year's championships after breaking the meet, facility, and program record with a mark of 13.42 seconds.
Junior Grahm Breiter comes into Fairfax with the conference's top time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by thirteen seconds. The Ladera Ranch, Calif. native broke the program record and was named the A-10 Track Performer of the Week after finishing the event in 8:53.74 at the Wake Forest Invitational on April 20.
"After the regular season, we have a few guys at the top with a lot more in the fight for podium positions," said Stuck. "After being a bit sick and injured during the indoor championships, we are ready to bounce back and show what we are capable of."
Other story lines to keep an eye on this weekend is senior Josh Hardin's quest for a three-peat in the 400-meters after winning the A-10 in 2022 and 2023. He enters with the fourth-fastest qualifying time. Another senior, Chinedu Okeke, enters with the sixth-fastest time in the 100-meters and broke the school record earlier this spring.
In field events, Jack Stajos looks to make the podium for a second straight year after taking silver in the shot put a season ago. He currently ranks second in the A-10 in the discus after a record-breaking throw of 51.56 meters this season and ranks third in the shot put. Junior Nick Masterman also sits third in the javelin after a career-best throw of 58.90 meters back in early April which was the second longest in Davidson history.
"Our team always brings their best at championships meets so it will be fun to see what we can do at our best," added Stuck.
