PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – New Year. Same Streak. Davidson extended the nation's fifth-longest winning streak and matched the longest (2006-07) in school history with a 69-50 victory at La Salle Tuesday evening in Atlantic 10 play.
The 'Cats, who haven't lost since dropping a 74-70 decision at No. 16/17 North Carolina Nov. 21, improved to 12-1 (2-0 A-10) with their 10th straight win.
Four Wildcats concluded the contest in double figure points, including Millie Prior, Charlise Dunn, Elle Sutphin and Suzi-Rose Deegan. Prior led the way just short of a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Dunn chipped in 13 points to go along with three rebounds, three assists and a pair of blocks. Deegan went for 10 points and six rebounds.
Back on the floor for the first time since late November, Sutphin picked up where she left off, tacking on 12 points, two assists and a steal on a 6-of-7 showing from the floor.
After a back-and-forth start, the Wildcats closed the first frame with a 20-7 streak to go in front for good.
Leading 24-12 after one, Davidson carried the momentum into the second quarter, pushing the lead to 31-13 on a Deegan jumper at the 7:33 mark, before the Explorers cut the deficit to single digits at the half, 35-26.
The Explorers extended their run into the third quarter and made it 39-37 midway through the period. But Davidson responded with a 13-2 run capped by a Deegan triple to end the third leading 53-39.
Davidson, which finished the game shooting 49.0 percent, scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to take its largest lead and put the game out of reach.
Molly Masciantonio led the way for La Salle (3-10, 0-2 A-10) with 17 points.
