Field Hockey Hosts La Salle, Wake Forest This Weekend

9/28/2023 11:50:00 AM | Field Hockey

Having won two of its last three, the Davidson field hockey team will host two home games this weekend.

The Wildcats, now 4-6, will face Atlantic 10 foe La Salle on Friday night at Belk Turf Field, then meet Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon.

Through 10 games of an 18-game schedule, the Wildcats have shown improvement and progress, says coach Zoe Almquist.

"I have seen so many firsts in this team's sense of identity, in how we battle back into a game, believe in each other and really play for our teammates," she says. "Our growth has been visible to everyone who is watching. But losing four games in overtime and then one by a lone goal in the final minutes of the match shows me we have some more hurdles to clear. So, in the back half of the season, that is our next focus point. Not just, 'how do we show up at our best?' But, 'how do we let our best drive us all the way through the finish line?' I'm excited to see us take on the challenge."

LATEST ON THE 'CATS
Davidson is coming off a 3-1 win over Stonehill last Sunday, when the Wildcats scored two fourth-quarter goals to seal it.

The go-ahead goal came off the stick of Abby Pompeo and was her team-leading sixth of the season. She's tied for second in the A-10 in scoring and tied for fifth with 12 points.

Macy Curtis and Matilda Collins lead the Wildcats with three assists apiece and are tied for fifth in the A-10, and Curtis, Collins and Hannah Merritt have scored three goals.

Curtis ranks third in the A-10 with 1.70 shots-on-goal per game.

SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS
La Salle enters Friday's game 5-4 overall and 1-1 in the A-10.

Last weekend, the Explorers lost to ranked teams Rutgers (No. 10) and UMass (No. 18).

La Salle features two of the A-10's top scorers in Sol Espona (5 goals) and Clara Larripa (4 goals, 2 assists). Forward Tatum Johnson (5 points) was an A-10 First Team pick last year, ranks second in the league with 3.00 shots per game and scored two goals in La Salle's 3-0 win over Davidson a year ago. Defender Sofia Pla is a two-time A-10 Second Team selection.

La Salle has won the last six meetings with Davidson.

SCOUTING THE DEMON DEACONS
Wake Forest enters the weekend 3-4 overall and 0-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Demon Deacons are set to visit ACC rival Duke on Friday before traveling to Davidson.

Midfielder Ava Moore leads the Deacons with two goals. Midfielder Nat Friedman is a three-time All-ACC selection, and goalkeeper Ellie Todd was an ACC Second Team pick last year.

Wake Forest is not currently ranked but has been as high as 12th nationally this season.

Davidson is seeking its first win over Wake Forest since 1991.

SUNDAY'S PINK GAME
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Wildcats are dedicating Sunday's game to those who are battling or have battled breast cancer.

The field hockey team is also partnering with Connor House's Bosom Buddies event, which raises money for Earlier.org, a non-profit organization in the fight against breast cancer.
