DAVIDSON — Two fourth-quarter goals helped the Davidson field hockey team push past Stonehill 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Belk Turf Field, as the Wildcats earned their second win in the last three games.
Davidson improved to 4-6 overall, while Stonehill fell to 1-8.
"Credit to a hard-fought, prepared Stonehill team in today's game — they really brought their best to the field today, and I'm so proud of my team for finding a way to pull out the win," said Davidson coach Zoe Almquist. "We really bounced back from a long game on Friday, and we were able to generate a lot of attack. It was a full-team fight — from some key saves by Cato Roell, to patient tackles by our backs, to excellent distribution in the midfield, all the way to Abby Pompeo and Macy Curtis going the extra mile to finish up front."
Pompeo scored the go-ahead goal at the 12:07 mark of the fourth quarter off an assist from Matilda Collins. It's Pompeo's team-best sixth goal of the season.
Davidson held a 1-0 lead at the half after Curtis scored off a penalty corner, assisted by Ava Mickel and Bella Worthington, 6:06 into the contest.
With 5:05 to play, the Wildcats put more distance between them and the Skyhawks, as Hannah Merritt scored on an assist from Sarah Grace Clifton.
Stonehill tied it at the 13:06 mark of the third quarter on a goal by Raegan Hickey.
The Wildcats finished with a 27-6 advantage in shots, including 16-3 in shots-on-goal, and an 8-4 edge on penalty corners.
